I am currently learning and practicing this tune, Caoineadh Cu Chulainn, the same one played by Davy Spillane in Riverdance. However, I would like to be able to correctly pronounce the name of the tune. On a search I found the Cu Chulainn pronunication, but not the “Caoineadh” part. Can anyone provide a phonetic pronunciation of this word?
Thanks!
Alan
QUEEN-ah.
It means “lament” - in the literal sense of an expression of grief, whether musical or not.
Hey Alan,
It’s a beautiful piece isn’t it? I’ll caution you against recording it or performing it in public though - at least for money, or in a pub that charges a cover, even if you don’t get any pay for the gig. I ran into this problem with this tune several years ago. Copyright lwas are sticky things - especially the Irish ones.
But still a beautiful tune! ![]()
