Pretty whistles - DIY

Okay, so I was drooling over those pretty elfsongs and whining about my lack of funds (being a college student seems to cause empty wallets) so I decided to go the cheap route and just buy some spray paint.

I got dark blue paint and some clear stuff with sparklies.

Right now, I’ve got a blue sparkly generation F (I used one of my gen F’s for a guinea pig since I have 2 of them) hanging off the pipes in my basement drying.

It’s not quite as prettyful (yes that’s a word!!) as the elfsongs, but for us poor folk, it’s a good deal!

SO GO PAINT YOUR WHISTLES!!

There. I fixed the subject. Stop whining.

… just be sure you mask off the head on your plastic ones, and plug up the finger holes (from the inside - stuff with paper towel, is one way), or you could damage the plastic (depending on the paint) or cause weird noises to issue from your playing!

On an early black Feadog, I noticed that the interior of the tube was heavily spattered with paint that apparently came through the holes during spray-painting. Forcing three progressively finer wads of steel wool through it improved the tone considerably.

uh… one thing I wondered… TelegramSam, do “DYI” mean “Do Yaself In”? Is this some subtle reference to how whatzisname perceives me, da Soipent? Should I be as paranoid as he seems to be? Or are dey really, really out ta get me?!
(trembling in anticipation of that post from You Know Who..)

I just showed my daughter your post and she was so excited…she thought she and a couple of her friends were the only ones who used the word “prettyful.” Now, when her grammar-correcting friend at school gets on her for using a coined word, she can say “Hey! It is too a real word! I saw it on Chiff & Fipple!” (then send the poor kid running for a dictionary to find out what “Chiff” and “Fipple” mean).

Where does “prettyful” come from?? Was it on a tv show or something? My almost-9 year old daughter started using it last year and I’ve been wondering where on Earth she picked it up! :stuck_out_tongue: I keep telling her to use proper English, but that word won’t go away… Please enlighten me!!

one bit of advice–Don’t try transporting your whistle until it’s completely dry.

I had to go back to my dorm and I didn’t want to leave it so I rolled it in paper, but it got a scratch on it anyhow. pouts

oh well…

Oh, and I did stuff it with paper first, and I don’t know where the heck the word “prettyful” came from. I picked it up from my dumb friends…

Prettyful sounds rather Tolkien doesnt it?TS,if its a brass gen you have prettyfied,an alternative to the spray method is hobby paint used for model airplanes etc…just paint it on with a brush. It drys real fast and is quite durable.I much prefer your original "do yourself it"title to the re-edit:) Mike

Cool idea, Mike! And the hobby paint comes in a much larger assortment of colours and finishes than the spray stuff - pearls, metal flakes, right down to good ol’ Candy Apple Red! If you’re careful with the brushwork, you’ll not even see the strokes. Maybe I’ll do my old Gen, too!

P.S. If you have an airbrush, you can mix the hobby paint with thinner and spray it, too!
