I’ve been a lurker for a while, but now I’m getting desparate.
I’m still looking for a practice set. I have a feeling its going to end up that I’m going to have to order one new…in a few years, as I can’t afford them now.
If you guys see anything out there, send me a pm. Even if you friends are selling I’d be willing to take a look.
Also, has anyone ever heard of edsel matic? I met him on myspace, and his pipes do not sound half bad. He makes his practice sets out of cocobolo, without the key mounts though. The bellows are red oak.
Would you guys go take a look and tell me if I’m getting better at telling a quality Uilleann pipe, or if I’m just dreaming.
I had a listen to the soundfile on MySpace. I wasn’t impressed with the tuning. The first 3 notes of the 1st octave sounded flat and the upper half of the 2nd octave sounded sharp.
For the $675 he asking for a practice set, you’d be better off getting in touch with Pat Sky (www.patricksky.com) and ordering one of his budget practice sets ($600).
David Daye’s “Penny Chanter” with black Delrin upgrade: $205 (chanter only; practice set deliveries seem to be on hold at the moment). Bag stocks from David, for ‘kit assembly’, are doubtless available for very little money, and youy could obtain a bag and bellows from various other sources.
Yes it seems like that scale gets REALLY sharp up there.
I’ve had a lot of people come around with David Daye chanters and they play very well. I think people are put off by the way they look, but the important thing is how well they play, how well the reeds are made.
The least expensive way to get a well-playing practice set is to get a Daye chanter and get a good bag and bellows, from Dixon for example.
There’s a Boston Pipeworks set here that plays well also.
i have a suggestion. Why don’t both you master pipers comment on my work if and only if you have one in your hands? Is that fair to SLANDER my business just because you heard a sound file? You don’t have any chanters I’ve made yet you, because you’re such MASTERS OF THE UILLEANN PIPES and MAKERS OF THEM, you openly SLANDER ME? Why does not NPU or Pipers Review Endorse your recommendations?
I will personally write letters to them and let them know of the MASTERS they’ve over looked.
There’s so many experts out there needing attention. Unless your a master maker, or unless your NPU or PR and I’ve donated my work for your critique, or unless your an unsatisfied customer → SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
There’s so many masters out there. Not that i give a fuck what you think, but I perform on a weekly basis on my own pipes made from my hand and reeds from my hand.

i used to think very highly of my passion with the uilleann pipes… i didn’t think or conceive that others that loved it as much as I would so arrogantly spew out opinions on works that you don’t even own.

No one has made any comments regarding your work, or your skills as a piper/pipemaker.
Previous posters made some comments regarding the sound file that you have uploaded on Myspace for public listening, by request from a beginner seeking advice on this forum. By distributing this file for the public you should also be open for criticism.
The advice to start with a set from a well known maker with years of experience of making quality sets for beginners instead of a new unknown maker that no one heard of, other then a sound file on Myspace, is nothing else than common sense.
Your replies on the forum are completely uncalled for, and the comment on your webpage (see quote below) regarding this issue are premature and represents nothing but gross slander.
And from that reading I guess you don’t need much help to slander your own business attempt.
And yes! Both billh and PJ are considered very knowledgeable and both frequently contributes and share their knowledge with the uilleann community on an international level.
Billh is also a highly respected pipemaker
My advice would be to remove the text on your web page ASAP and disappear until all this is forgotten, as I think your comments are way beyond an apology option.
If you have questions regarding the pipes I turn from my own hand, ask me. Don’t ask some cock sucker who doesn’t even own any of my work. If my harshness of words makes you uneasy, go x yourself!

I write this in response to two expert DOUCHE BAGS by the names of “billh” and “PJ”. These guys are such experts, they can JUDGE and SLANDER other people without an actual piece of work from those they’re critizing.

I’ve not doubt that your pipes are sound but why don’t you just get a better piper to record the sound clips on your website.
Who do you think would be willing to do business with you after they’ve witnessed an outburst like that?
I see no no slander in the comments on your clip, just qualified observers making an objective assessment based on a sound sample you provided. That’s entirely legitimate.
Take the criticism in stride, and keep working on improving your craft.
And if you pull out your recent back issues of The Pipers’ Review, I think you’ll find several articles that billh contributed, including descriptions of hollow-stock construction and the making of a Taylor-style bass drone. He’s been very generous with his contributions there and elsewhere, and is certainly qualified to comment.
I live in the same metro area as Mr Matic and he is indeed a real person. Have not directly met him yet but we have friends in common and we have emailed, so I know him to not be Royce putting on a new screen name.
Are you sure his name isn’t Mr. Manic (as in one who engages in violent abnormal behavior)? Based on some of his other spellings, maybe there’s a typo in his name?
