Hey everyone,
Maybe this is old news here already… I just noticed Davy Stephenson is offering something new on his website: practice set KITS. I think that’s a pretty cool/different idea. Check it out:

Hi,
looks like a good idea, it’s about £320 so it’s good value considering that it can be up-graded with keyed chanter, drones etc if and when required. It’s nice to see a maker prepared to provide beginner’s with a low cost option as pipes sure are expensive. Nice one Davy ![]()
Cheers, Mac
Just some things i was thinking about that could happen and I hope Davey doesn’t get into a lot of hassle with this..
I know for a fact that there are people that don’t even dare to rewind a stock let alone build a set..
Is there any guarantee on those kits or screw it up and it’s too bad?
What if they have problems putting it together/getting it to work/in tune?
The thing i fear the most is what will happen when someone built one and sells it off as a genuine bagpipeworks…
Hi Joey,I saw these for the first time last night, when I had another look at that Boxwood halfset in ‘B’. Davey is to be applauded for doing his utmost to make U.P.'s available to beginners on a budget.
Rick makes a good point there about unscrupulous people trying to pass off self finished kits as ‘all Davey’s work’.Is there any safeguard against this? I suppose even certificates could be forged( God,this is starting to sound a bit paranoid isn’t it! “yes Mr. Bond,my secret plan is to flood the world with bodged uilleann pipes!!! mwuuhaahaa!!”
)

I can say, I only gaurantee my own work and that the chanters here mentioned are already reeded and in tune, its the rest of the set that is in need of finishing off, of course at at your own risk, if you feel that you do not have the skills to do it then, you probably won’t try, and you save up for a finished set.
The description says if you think you have the nessesary skills, this is the package for you, I know that plenty of people out there DO have the skills or may know someone else that does, so those that do and have and take the plunge will save a chunk of cash over a complete set.
The whole idea is to get the less well off playing for a reasonable price, if they don’t want to take the plunge and build their own set, there is always the student, they can get a superb ready made bag from Mc Harg and a second hand set of bellows from someone else, the price is right, the kit is right, the rest is up to you.
Yours tryingly
Davy.
Bravo,Davey! ![]()
Don’t get me wrong Davey.., i appreciate the effort.
I was just wondering if it wouldn’t return and bite you and if you had thought about the points i raised.
Perhaps he stamps the bellows he makes himself, and leaves the ones that are to be finished by the purchaser unstamped. Or if he doesn’t, perhaps that would be a good way to keep track.

Thats right, I put a date and serial No. inside the bellows and somewhere else on all set/parts, but don’t go taking things appart just to find them, the bellows in kits are going to be made from one type of timber only.
