Posting Clips ??????

Dear Dale and the moderators, please could we have a sticky thread here equivalent to the similar one on the Flute Forum?

Here, to kick it off, are a couple of jigs I’ve been playing for donkey’s years on my old (untweaked) Generation Bb - could anyone wish for a better sounding whistle? The tunes are The Dancing Master and The Jolly Old Man - O’Neill’s 1001 #183 and #142 respectively. The Dancing Master is transposed to E Dorian (fingering) from the original A Dorian and The Jolly Old Man is also known as Bung Your Eye or The Brisk Young Lads, though those versions seem to have a slightly different B music.

These won’t do?

Not to mention http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/newspage.htm (which is what Nano’s first link is all about.)

OK, maybe slightly red face time  in that I didn’t know about Clips & Snips etc. - I mostly concentrate on the Flute Forum and matters flutey, and haven’t much explored the rest of C&F itself apart from dabbling in this main Whistle Forum and reading the Whistle Reviews. So maybe it would be unnecessary duplication…

As for the Youtube Sticky, I haven’t explored that either, nor very much its equivalent on the Flute Forum, due to lack of time and the sheer volume of stuff plus my not terribly fast computer making using video links a trifle tiresome… If there are audio clips on the Whistle Youtube Sticky, I didn’t know it… my omission, obviously! I kinda assumed (oh dear, and I so often warn against making assumptions!!!) it would be like the Flute Forum one.

As we have separate audio and video clip stickies on the Flute Forum I wondered why we didn’t have the same here and thought it might be a good idea to do so. I admit I didn’t research what existing facilities there were. Actually, on reflection, I still think it would be desirable - it’s nice to be able to monitor stuff in one place and not have to go shooting off around the Web… I spend too much (very worthwhile and enjoyable) time at this lark! I like to keep it simple.

However, as it seems my suggestion is probably redundant and unlikely to meet with much support, I’ll take the request out of the title.

Thanks Nano, Annie.

But…Nano!!!

Only 46 more stickies and all other threads will be on the 2nd page!

OK, I’ve been doing a bit of looking at the links suggested by Nano and Annie. These are my thoughts:-

I haven’t gone right through the Youtube sticky, but a quick scan suggests that I was right to assume it would primarily, if not solely contain video clips.

Tinwhistletunes/Clips and Snips is a fine site/resource, but it does not fulfill so far as I can see the role of the Posting Clips sticky on the Flute Forum, or indeed the Youtube sticky here, in producing feedback, discussion and community support - certainly not in an as obviously accessible way.

There are fewer stickies at the head of this Forum than on the Flute one. I think we could cope with one more!

So, I reiterate (quietly!) my suggestion/request that we have such a sticky on this forum. If people agree with me, perhaps they’d like to post some clips here and see what happens? If whistlers are not familiar with how the one over on Flutes works, go have a look and see what you think. Like all online discussion boards, it has its bad moments, but in general I think it is a very positive and useful thing.

Ah… i see, you are talking from an “I would like feedback on this” standpoint. That does change it a bit, I agree. Have you been to the “Whistle This” site? That is the premise there, though they have generally been focussed on the posted tune of the moment. http://www.whistlethis.com/ I think that it will not be quite what you are talking about though.

I see the merit of what you propose. I would be no more likely to post to it than the others though, I think. (You can all thank me for that in advance. )

Hi

But we want it here! Because we want to show off to our C&F friends, not to a bunch of strangers!

Well, “showing off” isn’t really the point, though I guess one has to have an element of that in one in order to perform in public/post at all! The Clips thread on the Flute Forum has bits from folk at all levels from beginner to quite advanced, though I guess in general people moving at pro/regular paid performer standards don’t much bother with this kind of thing. But there are plenty of very good amateurs whose standards approach that level but who for whatever reason don’t want to or can’t become pro performers and who appreciate the chance to air their efforts (and get constructive comments/appreciation) in a way that prior to the internet you could really only do at a Folk Club (much more stressfully!). If you don’t have access to a Folk Club or a session to test out your skills and perform your latest number, this kind of thing provides a fair substitute.
