I am Barrister Tom Tida, a solicitor at law, personal attorney to Engr.P.B.Bystander , a national Of your country,who used to be a contractor and importer here in Lome Togo. Here in after shall be referred to as my client. On the 21st of April 2002, my client,his wife and their only daughter were involved in a ghasty motor accident along Nouvissi express Road. All occupants of the vehicle unfortunately lost there lives. Since then I have made several enquiries to your embassy here to locate any of my clients extended family relatives, this is to no avail.

Dear Mr Tida,
I was very interested to receive your communication. There are not many members of the Bystander family in existence, as my Great-Grandfather changed his name in 1881 after being disowned by his Father, Mr James MacIlhinny of Lisburn, County Down.
The client to which you refer sounds like my Great-Uncle, Mr Padraig Bystander. He had no other name than this. It may possible that latterly he used another name beginning with B – I really could not say. No-one in the family is aware of it.
However, because of his disgraceful behaviour, and the activities which brought shame on the family name, my Father was told by his Father never to speak of him, and he never did. Indeed, my Mother on her deathbed cautioned me to beware of my Great-Uncle, and in no circumstances have anything to do with him. He was trained, I believe, as a Civil Engineer, and many of his immoral schemes depended on this qualification.
So my position is this. If your client is not Padraig Bystander, then there is no possibility of his being even remotely related to me. If your client is indeed Padraig Bystander, then I wish to have nothing to do with him or his estate. In either case, I suggest you invest the money in your business, or give the amount to charity, as your conscience directs you. If this is not possible, then let the Security Finance Firm confiscate it, and welcome. No-one in my family would wish to have anything to do with it. Anyone who knew the full story of my Great-Uncle’s shocking history would feel the same.
I would dearly love to draw a line under the regrettable fact of my Great-Uncle’s existence. Our hearts would be relieved in sorrow to know of the death of this terrible man. It is a grim consolation that he died without issue, if your client is one and the same.
So my question is this: does the abbreviation “Engr.” Mean “Engineer”? In Ireland this is not common usage, although we understand it is the case in Germany, to which my Great-Uncle initially fled. The answer to this question would set our minds at rest.
