Portable recorder

Please keep us posted if you get one of the Ediro R-1’s. Apparently they are shipping any day now…

I’m saving up to get one…probably in March and will be curious to hear what people think after they’ve had a chance to use one for a while.

Here’s another little tip about less expensive MP3 stuff like the Samsung YEPP line. Those do a pretty respectable job at recording “casually”, and I used one to get my troupe’s live performances at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, on occasion. I found that if I laid the recorder in a basket on a pad of fabric, put a piece of heavy fabric (denim in this case) over the whole thing, it did a much better job of recording the high-volume bits without clipping problems, and it didn’t seem to affect the over-all performance.

Do be aware that you’re not going to get exceptionally good quality from the YEPP-class stuff, as they’re optimized for voice memo recording - but it will be adequate to give you a good idea how you’re sounding to your audiences, and they are getting less expensive every day. I bought my latest one on eBay for less than $50USD.
Cheers,
Bill Whedon.
