playintune.net: learn tin whistle with midi files

Hello,

Playintune http://www.playintune.net is a site to learn the tin whistle (penny whistle) easily and quickly. Just send your tune in midi format, and a virtual whistle shows you how to play it (fingering/blow) at the speed you like.
No need to read a score, if you have the midi, you know how to play it!
Playintune is also a library: every tune is archived and can be listen online.
I initially developed this system for my own needs, since I’m not gifted in reading scores  .
I hope this will be useful to others!

Really quite ingenious. I’m sure there are people for whom this will be their only way to get started.

The only drawback is that it will instill them with the habit of tonguing every note, which is a hard habit to break for some people.

That’s true, tongue is not really managed with this system. In fact I think tongue/breath management is more an interpretation issue (this is neither written in the midi nor on the score), and a computer will never reach the human capacities in this field.
Perhaps a solution would be to let people record themselve online (using the PC micro, perhaps with the webcam?). The sound (or the video) would give people an example on how the tune can be played. This is technically possible for me.
Does someone has an idea ?

I am in the process of writing an interactive whistle method aimed at people who do not read music at all but would like to learn to play an instrument.

I decided to approach the tonguing issue by showing in one demo video what happens if you try and voice each note with a separate puff of breath compared to making a continuous stream of air and interrupting it with your tongue to create individual notes. Then I mention that tonguing is not used as much in the Irish style. My method is not aimed specifically at ITM, it is a basic “how to play simple tunes on a whistle” with people being left to decide what style direction they want to go in after that.

Its an ongoing work and I won’t put it out until I have revised it thoroughly and tested it with a few people.

This approach is interresting, tell us when it will be online.
ITM means Irish Traditional Music?

yep…also IrTrad
