Playing With Matt Molloy!

Here is a great sounding aire that I worked out this morning and was then able to play along with Matt on his Heathery Breeze CD:
Idir Deighric ‘Gus Breo’ Track 8

Well, it made me feel good!
It’ll take me awhile to work up to #11 though!

I’m working on Tracks #4 and # 10 also

Who else is working out tunes from CD’s ?

(Boy, it’s nice to have a week off of work!)

Mary

great album indeed, my favourite between Matt’s recordings (together
with the black one maybe). His version of the Morning Dew (or the Hare
in the Heather, as he call it) is a masterpiece. He’s still the most musical
traditional flute player I’ve ever heard, the man who can balance better
class and elegance with power. OK stop, but I may write about him for
5 or 6 hours!

I use to learn tunes listening the Cd’s, I enjoy a lot playing with Molloy, Danu, Solas…
I can play 150 tunes more or less, I learnt 149 from CD’s and one from score!
Serafin.

It is my goal to someday be able to play The Mason’s Apron.

I spent three months to learnt it. But I had to slow down the tune.
Serafin.

I too learn only from cd’s or session tapes.Luckily I have a good ear,so
I memorize the melody without picking the flute. Then I have only to practise!
Learning from flat pitch recording’s (such as Sean Potts B pipes,
or Michael O’Raghallaigh’s Bb concertina, or Bb flute tracks) is harder, but
more satisfying.
Everybody who want to learn traditional music should forget the dots in
my opinion (at least for the first three years, then if you have this skill you
can find some nice unusual tune on books!)

Try to find the Micho Russel’s version of the tune, which is simply wonderful
( and also wonderfully simple  )

or also the Oisin McDiarmada version-which his very much inspired by Micho Russel’s!

I would love to hear Micho’s version since I am constantly enthralled by Molloy’s version on his Shadows on Stone album. My jaw drops everytime I hear it! That’s a comendable goal Jessie

I’ve learned the Clare Jig as played by Gary Shannon in the style of Micho Russel, and you’re right Michel - while not lighting quick with ornaments, etc, he has a very capitvating style!

edit P.S. someone seems to have failed to show Michel the ‘edit’ feature for adding afterthoughts to posts :stuck_out_tongue:

At least we get to see more photos of that food avatar. Some avatars are a little gross.

I’ve learned it from an old cassette, but I think it is on the more common
Micho Russel’s recording, with his big smiling face on the cover. It’s got only two parts, differently from the more common “showpiece version”.

And YES I KNOW HOW TO EDIT POSTS-BUT I LIKE TO SEE
SOME PESTO BOWLS!

You could have achieved a nice Irish double-entendre by naming this thread “Playing with HIMSELF!” Mary . . .

Just a thought.

Stuart

Ah, but the late Derek Bell already has that distinction.

And yes, you two, I already realized I should have probably entitled this thread somewhat differently!! :astonished:
