playing by ear (almost)

a couple of weeks ago, there was a thread in which someone said they had an excel file with cues about the first note of session tunes.

i was too slow to request a copy. i’m now trying to wean myself from dots on the page and find it easier to play by ear if i can get the first note right.

can anyone help me?

Shoot. Just the first note? I’d need at least 2 bars to get rolling. So many tunes start the same way.

tips:
1.learn tunes in sets
2. the tunes belong to the session. for the most part
3. The tunes are remembered by: remember the time that so and so dropped a pint of Guinness.
4. Tunes are learnt best when they trigger some kind of emotion other than stamp collection
5. Play with a firend outside of the session so you CAN play that tune that others won’t let you play.
6. Have losts of fun. More fun, more tunes.
