Does anyone know what type(and key) of whistle is used on the planxty DVD for the tune “As I roved out”???
I don’t remember specifically in this tune, but Liam plays a Generation and a Burke (not sure whether NB or Session, but it’s a new-style one) in the show.
Planxty do two songs with that title! They’re both on the latest live album, and also both on one of their earliest albums.
The broken token one, sung by Andy Irvine, is played on a high Bb, I think. And the other one (the night visiting one), sung by Christy Moore, is played on a high D.
Those are the original keys from The Well Below the Valley, too.

Yeah, thanks, now ya gotta get a Bb whistle! They’re good for playing along with that Joe Cooley tribute as well as other Frankie Gavin versions. I need one meself.
The version sung by Andy Irvine is played on a Bb on the audio CD, but it’s played on a B natural on the DVD… not sure about the maker.
The version sung by Christy Moore is played on a high D on both the audio CD and the DVD… Liam plays it on a narrow bore brass Burke on the DVD.
