PJ Polka

Hi. Does anyone know of another name for this tune and/or who PJ is?

Thanks!

(sorry for x-postings…I’ve asked this a few different places)

Lovely wee tune isn’t it?

I learned that years ago from a fellow musician and never had a name for it. But I heard it again recently on “It’s no secret” by Con O Drisceoil, Seamus Creagh and Hammy Hamilton and I think they call it Din Tarrant’s. Brad Hurley could tell you because the record was his.

Not a very useful name is it, Din Tarrant being a Sliabh Luachra fiddler whose name is attached to quite a few tunes.

There are a few little differences between the way I first heard it and the way that Seamus and co. play it, but both versions have this figure in common in the second part, which I think would give a bit more lift than what your colleagues there are doing:

Start of B part:
d>e fa | ge ed | cA eA | e/f/e/d/ cA

(Actually Seamus and co play “gf ed” rather than “ge ed” in that passage which I consider a tad cheesy, but the rest is common.)

Holy smolkas! I plugged Din Tarrant’s into JC’s Tunefinder and came up with six polkas – NONE of which are the Din Tarrant’s polka I know (sort of a B minor/G major one)

On the plus side, I did find one Julia Clifford recorded that I’ve been after lately – yippee!

Sorry I couldn’t be more help, Brett. I don’t know your tune, although I especially like the ending.

Yes, that’s what they call it on “It’s No Secret.” When I learned it years ago it was given to me with the even less useful name of “A Kerry Polka.”

 Yep, I thought the bit at the end was funny…

Well. . . polkas never really have names anyway.

Gosh, what a nice tune!
