I’ve been listening to the Pipers Gathering CD and I’ve got a few questions:
Benedict Koehler’s piping is outstanding. Why don’t we hear more? Will someone please twist his arm until he gets into the recording studio? Does he have any other recordings?
Does Debbie Quigley only play the bass drone? It’s got a great sound, almost a growl.
BK does a couple of sets of tunes with Brian McNamara on Brian’s CD Fort of the Jewels. He also has a couple of tracks with Kevin Rowsome on a much older CD of the Elkins doings, I believe. Sorry, I don’t have that CD, so I can’t provide any more information than that.
There is a downloadable mp3 file of his rendition of The Dear Irish Boy at the Baltimore tionol in 2000 available at this site:
He’s regulator work is very precise. Sometimes he seems to hit only one key at a time to harmonise with the chanter. Very nice. You don’t hear that often enough.
Another reason for me to pick up the Fort of Jewels, as if I needed another reason.
The piping on that recording is mighty tasty indeed. Brian’s piping is nearly as perfect as it is live, and Benedict’s playing is great as well… and very similar to what Brian is doing… a mighty CD IMHO.
