Just received “Volkswagen Driver” magazine - comes with the car (when I heard you got a free magazine subscription, man, the deal was set…).
Flipping through it, there was an article on Annapolis, MD, by Tony Sclafani, photos by Michael McDermott. In the first picture, there is a pub scene with a piper in the corner playing a full set with a bodhran player in the foreground, a fiddler’s hand and a couple flutes on the table. The piper looks to be about 40-ish, wire rimmed glasses. Not sure, but the chanter looks a little like Williams’ - has a chanter stop key.
The article mentions nothing about the music, but a few establishments are mentioned: Rams Head Tavern, King of France Tavern and Fordham Brewing Company.
Anyway, if this piper is you, or you know who this is, -and- you have not gotten a copy of this magazine, or would like another for your (or your friend’s) mother-in-law, PM me and I will mail it to you.
Hey, I was in Annapolis a few weeks back and heard this piper. He is great. I forget his name, but I think he lives in Baltimore. The set is an Alain Froment set - full in D. It sounds grand.
This is a really nice pub and a great session. Well worth the drive out to Annapolis to catch it. Very nice folks too.
Oh, that looks like that’s Charlie, uh, McVicar? Met him at Irish Arts Week in East Durham last summer. Told me a great story about having had his pipes ripped off and then somehow recovering them, but the details escape me - many surplus brain cells fell in battle that week. At least I think they were surplus… Ever see the film Memento?
I think I met him about 10 years ago. He and a bouzouki player were busking in Strasbourg in front of the cathedral. He’s also quite good on the moothie.
He and said bouzoukist had a cassette… I think they called themelves “Dogs Among the Bushes” and the tape was called “Calliope House” or vice versa.
