Picture - playing two whistles at once

This, along with other pictures, is posted in the “Boys of the Lough, take 2” thread that brewerpaul started, but I see that there are few views of that thread. I think this picture is worth seeing. It’s a bit out of focus, but how cool is that?!?

That’s cool OK but he sure has a weird nose.

Did anybody ever try the two whistles/two players trick? You sit next to another whistle player. If there’s a whistle player to my right I would put my left hand under my whistle and on the top three holes of their whistle. They would put thier left hand on the top three holes of my whistle. (I hope I’ve got it right). When you get the logistics of it worked out you play the same tune Cozy.

Looks like that monopodicular alien is trying to swallow his face! That’s gotta hurt

That’s Hillarious Paul! Ha ha!

I actually saw John Williams do that once…but with a couple of low O’Riordans… Drool…

I have an “Isle of Light” CD, which has a track on it simply titled “Two Whistles, Two Hands.” The guy actually does a pretty darned good job, playing harmony even on a fairly sprightly little jig. There’s a pic of him playing in the liner notes, but it’s not as clear as this one.

Redwolf

Wow! Cool!

He’s using whistles in 2 different keys! How about that!

Actually, that’s just the angle. They were both Eb Generations. He does, however, have a trick with a Bb and an F whistle. I haven’t seen it though.

Fun idea, and some cool talent going there! Are those by any chance whistles where one has the upper three holes plugged? I notice that his left hand is on the lower 3 holes, and that won’t work unless the uppers are stopped.

You got it, Bill!

Jessie,

I thought of a caption,

A response to the politician that talks out of both sides of his mouth at the same time.

The time when it’s vital that whistles be in tune with each other…

Cool! One of the “gadgets” I want to make later on, is a double whistle built with just 3 holes per side. I’ve read that somebody else did that, but don’t recall who it was.

OT for the thread, but thank you again for the review. Your and Tyghress’ comments about the breath requirements caused a really close look at the fipple, which was when I discovered the bad fixture (see the mainpage right column 2nd paragraph).

Cheers,
Bill

Great picture scoop. Who’d have thought that Hannibal Lecter is a whistle player.

I saw ErikT with a double whistle - foldable, in silver. Sounded beautiful. Made it himself. Maybe one side was ‘only’ a drone, though.

Erik the Flutemaker also does some sort of double whistle.

Ah, gotta love the Stupid Human Tricks.

But, can you play 3? How about out of your NOSE?

Of course, Sam. It’s the drone. Instead of being chiffy, they get “sniffy”… How astute that you know about that! Gives a whole new meaning to “Aw, go blow yer nose!”…

Don’t know about the nose. The late great Roland Kirk regularly played three saxophones at once, but all with the mouth. Of course, part of the trick is that one is a drone. But not necessarily the same one all the time. I saw him in person playing two saxophones simultaneously, after he’d had a stroke that paralysed him down one side. On a single saxophone he sounded as though he had the use of both hands. I have no idea how he did it.

The double and triple whistle trick isn’t particularly hard once you figure out how to balance them.

I’ve heard it said that Kirk could play sax, clarinet and oboe simultaneously—no problem, he didn’t have to stop chewing gum and sucking eggs either when he pulled that stunt.

Dare I suggest a google search on “le petomaine” ? Not for the faint of heart…

I saw this fine Whistler on a concert in Germany called Pure Irish Drops. Every year they feature three solists, each plaing a little set and after that they all play together. This time there were Joe Burke, Cathal McConnell and Eileen O’Brian.

Cathal McConnell played flute and sang some song and he also did this nice whistle trick. He said that he learned it from Bill Ochs, though he did not mention that you need this sort of mic to do it properly.
Cathal played a little Jig (can’t remember the name) and afterwards The Pinch of Snuff. Usualy he played a second voice on the tune and only sometimes he used the second whistle as a drone.

I think everybody owning two whistles can try this trick. Only a bit of concentration is needed and A LOT of practice - that’s it.
