Picture of your Reeds...

C’mon lads…we can have some real fun with this one! Joe, You’ve GOT to upload your pirate / beheading reed pic for us!

OK…
Gallagher C chanter reeds

Plastic reed experiment…

Made my eyes bloodshot playing it in the second octave.

Childress reeds in D

For some reason the image is not coming up… PAh…

Alan

Sorry, Quoting when I should be editing . Sorry!

Alan

Unknown reed, works spot on in most Flat chanters (C - Bb). Came from a box of Pipemaking/reedmaking gear from Bruce Du Ve.

Alan

I’d love to share the beheading photos, but I have no way of doing so. Perhaps if somebody would like to host them (maybe you Davey?), I could get them up.

But then again, maybe the photos are too graphic for some.

From the rather twisted and demented mind (trust me, I’ve known this krazy for over 15 years) of Joe Smith…

Thanks goodness we managed to exile him (under the care and maintenance of a very responsible young lady) as far away from Minnesota as possible! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks David, appreciate it. Twisted? Twisted?..you bet! Out of a batch of some 20 or so reeds, these were among the ones that were unplayable…so they went to
that place where all the bad reeds go… :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Reed-o-tine! Reed-o-tine!!! Ha-ha-ha-ha!!! :smiling_imp:

Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!

Patrick.

I’ve seen (and constructed) plenty of reeds that look great yet sound horrid. Same is true of pipes I guess. Just wondering what the point of posting pics of reeds would be…

Truely demented…something I admire in a person!

Joseph…you have WAAAAAAYYY too much time on your hands!!!

I don’t have much interest in how sets of pipes look, I prefer to hear and play them, but
I do like to see designs/examples of reeds because I make them , and as they say ’ a picture paints a thousand words '.
If I posted a pic of some Rowesome reeds, would that be interesting? (Rhetorical, not an offer)

Alan

Ah, those tubes of cane on the far right, lying beside the PVC pipes,
aren’t they suppose to be hollow?

1/4 education, 1/4 curiosity, 1/2 fun. Is there ‘supposed’ to be a point to posting pictures of reeds, or anything else for that matter? I find the relatively simple device which makes this instrument ‘go’ fascinating, intriguing and these pictures quite helpful to my on-going lessons in reed making and design.

Lorenzo…ah, I see what you are talking about. They are dowels I sometimes use for sanding purposes. One is actually a ‘winder’ that is laying on its side. I ‘pity da fool who’ attempts to use them for reeds.

I’m with Alan. I think comparing pictures of reed styles is useful.

Comparison of wide bore chanter reeds in D. Notice the area between the
bridle and the winding. tok really leaves a lot of bark in there to
stabilize…tends to keeps the reed from collapsing in climate changes.
Also, note the tapered vs. near parallel sides.

Top to bottom:

  4. BK

Talking of Tok, Where’s he to?

Alan

I don’t know. I worry about him sometimes. His marriage fell apart and his shoulder wouldn’t take playing the pipes much anymore. I think he moved to Maine. He can still make great reeds though. A really nice guy that perhaps wasn’t treated very nicely in return by a few AHs. He’d send out several reeds to anyone and let them choose the ones that worked best, then send back the ones they didn’t like..along with the $$.
