I’m looking for photos of either of these two makers behive sets. I’ve seen the four on Pat’s K&Q page, but I’m looking for any others as well. As it turns out, the beehive is Utah’s state symbol. What better “mascot” for the new Salt Lake Piping Club than a beehive set of pipes.

I have a series of detailed medium format slides of the original ‘beehive’ set.
A few things : the thing looked outrageous and for want of a better name we christened it the beehive set, the mounts do actually not really resemble beehives, the drones look more like minarets. It’s fierce oriental looking alltogether. Something you want to go playing outside the local mosque.
Another thing, the original ‘beehive’ set was not a Kenna. There was a Kenna chanter with it, stamped and all. The body of the pipes was of quite different workmanship. Mark Walstrom quite rightly identified the body as the work of Dublin pipemaker Ryan. The set is almost identical to a set in the National Museum of Ireland. I discussed the pedigree with Craig Fisher and he fully agreed. Except for the Beehive mounts that were probably put on by someone with a wild imagination. To fit to the original body them various parts were turned down, in the process obliterating the stamps likely put on Ryan put on them.
Good information to learn Peter - thankful to you as always. So My best bet is to go with the newer Quinn set as far as asthetics? Lewis you out there??
If you get a chance to order a K&Q instrument, talk to David about this feature if you want it. David’s version of a beehive turning is considerably more refined and tasteful-they are smaller and the work is finer. The turnings on the original beehive are enormous in places and look, well, silly IMO. The set currently in the keeping of Lewis Blevins also sounds pretty damned nice, too.
The B chanter that accompanies my set has some “beehive” style decoration on the “ivory” pieces at the throat and down by the bottom ferrule.
See a few other makes of pipes before committing to a decision. David can imitate a variety of turning styles and keywork - Egan, Coyne, Kenna, Taylor…
Oh, and the decorative pieces of “ivory” or whatever else is used are among the last things the pipemaker adds to the set, so you have time to think about it.

Has the set been sold? Mal Whyte is still the owner, I believe.
If that’s the case I’ll sweep up the spilled beans and put them back in the box so Mal nor a prospective buyer can trip over them.

I really don’t know, I just assumed that if they were posted on the Paris site that Marc G had aquired the set - no confirmation either way, but I would have thought that he would credit the owner.

Ken, in reply t oyour post the set had been sold I posted a message starting ‘as the set has bee nsold I ca nspill a few beans’ posting some more details about it. As Jim stated that Mal still has it, I withdrew that message, not wanting to post about a set still on the market.
