Philadelphia

I’m going to have the chance to be in Philly this weekend, at a time when stores are open. Does anyone have favorite music stores to recommend there? Or good places to hear whistle playing?

The best store I know of is well North of the city, Bucks County Folk Music (home of Bucks Bodhrans).

If you go up on Sunday, Plough and the Stars has a nice session from 4 to 9 pm. The Johns’ (McGillian on box and guitar and Brennan on fiddle and guitar) are usually there every week and cursing that each will never play with the other again . . . until maybe next thursday at the Glenside pub. Anyways, its a great session. There are usually some good whistle players present.

Why don’t you try going to the session tonight (Wednesday) at Piece of Ireland? Which is at 9 pm(ish), every week. The shopping center is on the Southwest corner of the intersection of RT 4 and Marrows Road. The bad whistle player is me.

Call ahead. I’ve done it twice. Its a lot of fun.

Thanks for the info! Maybe I’ll try to get to the session tonight. I’m supposed to go to the Greek festival, but maybe I can make the session after. If not, then next week.

As for Copeland’s shop, I’m afraid to go there – I know it will make me want several things I absolutely undoubtedly cannot cannot cannot afford :-/. (All that emphasis is me reminding myself . . . )

Didn’t make the session tonight, but I’ll really try next week. If I’d seen earlier that you were playing, I would have tried to get the folks I was with to stop on the way back from the Greek festival. So, perhaps I will see you then. I could bring my whistle, which would mean you’d no longer occupy the “bad whistler” seat, but I don’t think I’m quite brave enough for that yet.

I’m actually going to be in Philly on Sunday. I’m not sure if I can get free in the afternoon, but if I can I’ll try to get to the session there. Thanks for all the info. I didn’t know there was another Delawarian on the board!
