Peterson Stroboflip Tuner

I just purchased a Peterson Stroboflip tuner to tune my pipes. The instructions have me totally confused and I am extremely frustrated. I am ready to return the unit to the store for a refund.

The manual gives instructions on how to use the tuner to tune uilleann pipes but they are extremely brief and don’t give enough detail. Can anyone out there who uses this unit help me out?

The link below will take you to a forum about Peterson Products, alot of how to questions.

give them a call. The tuner is a great tuner. I use the software version to do guitar tech work. I don’t know about follow their generic layout for pipes. I personally don’t believe that would apply…

either way you bought yourself a great tuner. Use it to tune “A” on your pipes… Back d if you’re trying to see exactly where it is in relation to your A. aside from that, he should be tuned to your drones and once you get your “A” you should be able to go from there.

Their website has a little more. If you check out the manual for their V-SAM model, it should help a little more. You may consider programming your own tuning profile:

D +/- 0 Cents
E +4 Cents
F# -14
G -2
A +2
B -16
C -4 (or +17 which is more consonant)
C# -12

I like the V-SAM over the Strobo-Flip, though the Strobo-Flip is more portable. I generally use the V-SAM after making a new reed and my ears or an old Korg tuner when traveling, or after the reed’s settled into place.

An interesting little chart of just intonation stuff you’ve got there, Dionys. One thing that sparks my interest though is the 2 different ways to tune the C. The +17 cents tuning you mention as being more consonant. Does the -4 sound more “dominant 7-ish” or does it produce a nice piper’s C?
