When I was a young teenager, years and years before I ever even heard Irish music, I heard a little duet with two pennywhistles, I think on an album of country music.
I have since been unable to ever find the album, artist, or the music.
Does anyone know who did this piece, what the album was, and if this tune might appear anywhere online?
I found the song on Winmx listed as something by Hoyt Axton. I have never thought of him as a whistle player. But I did download the track and it is beautiful.
Kenith is right, it was recorded by Hoyt Axton.
I’ve had a copy of it in my MP3 collection for a good while now, and I’ve always wanted to record it myself as a duet with someone.
There are a few glitches in it, but I have been unable to find a better copy.
I uploaded it to my WEB space if anyone is interested: http://webpages.charter.net/raindog1970/Pennywhistle_Song.mp3
No guarantees how long it will stay there, so get it while you can!
It sounds like this is in D-flat major! (even on a silver flute, blech–I can do it, but I don’t like it)

My guess: that they recorded this using old Clarke whistles in C, which were a little sharp anyway, and the process of recording it on an LP made it a little sharper still.
Lovely lovely playing though! Not really Irish, actually the tune sounds more like late Medieval or early Rennaissance recorder (“handfluit”) music. Perhaps even a good reminder that though whistles fit Irish trad music very well indeed, they actually predate it, and can play in many other styles.

Dern! I was wishing that I could play along to learn the tune! Maybe I can play around with software and figure out a way to “retune” it…
Resurrecting this ancient thread for the many newer members of the forum.
I found a decent quality copy of ‘Penny Whistle Song’ while visiting YouTube this morning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IWKjpzG1Nw
