penny whistle history

I’m giving a SHORT talk on the pennywhistle at the Celtic society soon. Does any one know the link to the most concise and accurate rendition?
Mack

10 million years B.C. Stoneage man blows through a hollow bone & hears a pleasing sound.

1843 A.D. Clarke make the first mass produced penny whistle out of rolled tin with a wood plug in the end.

2002 A.D. Now lots of pennywhistles made!

Concise, but maybe inaccurate!

If you wish an accurate but summerized version specific to the “Penny Whistle”,the Clarke tutorial book is a good source. Anthony Baines book “Woodwind Instruments and Their History”, Dover publishing, is another good source.

If you are looking for information on Ducted windway or “flu-pipes” you can research Gemshorns and Recorders. I can point you to some sites Mack,if you have specific info you need. Hope this helps.

Hey Martin can I quote you on that earlier date and whistle material?

What I want is a well written essay that’s short and interesting enough that folks won’t fall asleep before I get to present my own whistlemaking evolution.

Thomas, Is the one you referred to the one that said he used one of his mother’s corset stays to make a saw?

Hi Mack,

Tom at the Whistelshop has a short version of the story here:

There is also a snippet from The Complete Irish Tinwhistle Tutor on the Chiff and Fipple website:

There’s even a nice photo of L.E. himself, holding some sort of malt beverage, which you may need after a talk such as this…

Best wishes
Robert

Hey Mack,

All right! Tell 'em how it happened and don’t forget the chapter about the Crysta///BREAK///TRANSMITIONINTERRUTION*//////VIAGRAGENERALORDER3365///SCARECROW-VACCUUM/////DISRUPT/////END*TRANSMITION…
and you’ll do just fine.
