Pedal Steel Guitars?

My parents have been line dancing at a club for exercise recently, and it has
re-awakened in my father a love for the pedal steel guitar sound. I had no
idea that my father liked such a thing, since we’ve never really been a country
music kind of family, but there you go…

Anyway, he was thinking about one day when he’s retired and has time on his
hands, he might learn to play one. He already plays classical guitar. So, does
anyone have any advice for a person who might one day want to take on this
crazy instrument? Seems like an interesting adventure…

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about in case you’ve never heard of it:

I have always been curious about how they work. I wouldn’t limit myself to C&W though. Check](http://youtube.com/watch?v=awI86rnHtwA&feature=related%22%3ECheck) out David Gilmour to see just how much can be accomplished with a PSG (pump up the volume).

Buy your Dad a Robert Randolph CD. That oughta turn his head around!

if pedal steel’s too expensive or tricky, there’s always lap steel:

Walk away..right now.

Probably one of the most expressive - within a kinda vocal context - but so incredibly complicated..

I once had the pleasure of sitting behind one of the tings..

Ten strings, a weird tuning, four knee levers and about a dozen pedals..
That’s before ye pick up the lump of steel thats glides across the strings.

And that was a cheapo..

Then I got around to hearing Loyd Green..

Walk away while you are ahead..they don’t come cheap…either.
