payne flute ?

Hi folks,

Have any of you heard of an old flute maker or makers called PAYNE. I am not sure this is the right spelling of the name as I couldnt make out the marking on the flute. While playing over in England this guy came to gig an showed me this old cocus 8 keyed flute, nicly made and in fairly good condition. I have never heard of this name so any information would be great.

Langwill lists Richard & George Payne 1835 - 41 as flute makersat
13. Little Newport St. London, and GC Payne, early 19th C. who is represented by a fife in the Dayton Miller collection.

Cheers Andrew, I am nearly sure there was a London address on the flute. The fellow who had the flute didnt play it, he told me he found it in a renovation job to an old house so god knows Andrew how long the flute had been there for. The flute in my opinion looked like it had been made in around the time you are talking about. It played sort of average but needed a bit of work so I am sure if someone like Chris Wilkes or the like worked on it the flute would be a gem.
