Passing the torch [The UPIL Fades]

No, this is not the next Peter Jackson movie working title.

After about nine years of effort I am passing the information in the
Uilleann bagPipe Information List [UPIL] to Patrick D’Arcy. I have been
unable to devote the attention to keeping the UPIL data as current and
relevant as it should be. I am sure that Patrick will take good care
of it.

You will find Patrick’s pages at:

http://www.uilleannobsession.com/

You will likely see this, or a similar note in several places in the
coming days. I will try to make a note of this on the current UPIL
homepage as well.

Shortly the current UPIL page will just house a link to Patrick’s
page(s). In time I will remove the UPIL altogether.

My best to all and I hope to see you at a Tionol in the future.
Dean Karres

Dean, did you know that the old UPIL is still out there? http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/academic/languages/gaelic/Pipes/Uilleann/uilleann-pipes.list or at least part of it. It’s pretty cool - all text - old fashioned and all that. The last message says you will be leaving for the USA. Looks like 1995? 9 years ago. :astonished: All the makers are still listed.
I found it a long time ago while researching pipemakers.

Best,
Paul

Dean-

I want to offer you a big, public THANK YOU for all the work you put into the UPIL over the years. It was an invaluable resource when I first considered taking the plunge into the world of UPs.

Thanks again and best of luck in all you do.

I am not suprised that there are ancient versions of the UPIL floating around. For those of you that are interested, the first version of the UPIL started out in late 1993 or sometime in 1994 as I was gathering whatever info I could put my hands on about the pipes before ordering my first set. Back in those dark ages it was all done as text through the various LISTSERVs and the Usenix Newsgroups. The first web based version was probably hacked up in 1995.

While I don’t know for sure about LISTSERV messages being archived, the newsgroup postings have almost all been archived and indexed somewhere. It was common for me to get a couple of info update requests a year for info on pages that had not existed in several years.

All the best,
Dean…K…

Hey Dean-sorry you have to pass on the pages, but it’s good to see you are still around (we met at Elkins in 97-courtesy of Steve and Karen W.)

How’s the piping going anyway?

Hey Dean,

Are you going to be in KC anytime soon?

Jeff

I would like to thank Dean for entrusting me with his work from over the years. The UPIL was a BIG help to me when I was starting out looking for a pipemaker. It was also great for tracking down and contacting people that lived in places I was passing through.

I am planning on making the “pipers” sections all database referrable so that updating and navigating it will be “easy”. I am hoping to combine it with my “Piper Bios” page at http://www.uilleannobsession.com/extras_piperbios.html

I will be contacting everyone in the UPIL “pipers” sections for updates so be forewarned. I also want to add a photo section for people to add a photo of themselves and their pipes if they so wish as on my “Piper Bios” page.

It will take some time to syphen it all into the http://www.uilleannobsession.com site so please be patient.

Thanks again Dean and I’ll do my best with the content you’ve given me.

All the best in your future endeavours,

Patrick.

Three cheers for Dean! And best of luck to Patrick with his siphoning! Yuck!

The UPIL was certainly one of my first ‘u-LEE-anne’ bookmarks!

Thanks for being there Dean.
