Parades

I had a dream that had a parade in it last night. There were all kinds of things in the parade and one thing was a troop of hackysack players in the parade. Has anyone ever seen a troop of hackysack players in a parade?

I rarely go to parades now but I used to live in downtown Hurricane. I could walk the half a block to the parade. They had 2 parades, a 4th of July and a Christmas parade. Hurricane was a small town sitting right smack in the middle of some of the most upscale intense development that West Virginia had ever seen but these parades maintained their small town appeal. There were only ever two bands in the parade. Hurricane High School and a Country Band on a flatbed truck. For the Christmas parade the country band would all dress up like Santa. Life don’t get no better.

The 4th of July parade in Takoma Park, MD, a very progressive thinking community, used to have a group of people pushing rotary (non-power) mowers. Don’t know if they still do that.

Inspired by Doo Dah?

The original: De Camptown ladies sing dis song, Doo-dah! doo-dah! De Camptown race-track five miles long, Oh, doo-dah day! …

We have a couple of parades a year in my small town. The Memorial Day parade is small and low-key, mostly veterans’ groups and such. But the 4th of July parade is a bigger one - they are trying every year to make it bigger and better. Several bands (including a part of the UW-Madison band), all sorts of organizations. The funny thing was the stuff being passed out - not only lots of candy as the norm for a parade, but the Frito-Lay people were passing out small bags of potato chips and the Dean’s Milk people were actually passing out little cartons of chocolate milk. That was a little strange.

We have small-town parades here. The high school band, plus lots and lots of retirees in golf carts.
