Hi.
I wonder if Na Piobairi Uilleann , whom I love and respect , will do a “dance Music of Paddy Keenan” . After all he has done so much to popularize the pipes over the years. After the all time greats ..Ennis ..Clancy ..etc what piper is known more than he , through the Bothy Band , which inspired so many to try the pipes.
I would expect the emphasis would be on keeping the memory alive of older “Classical” styles of piping. Of the “Big Three” only Rowsome’s work remains undocumented as far as styles and stylings go. There are also the old cylinder and 78 recordings that could be transcribed and examined for methodology.
Of them all, the one I would like to see documented is the playing of Johnny Doran. I am not holding my breath on this ever happening.
Jackie Small did quite a bit of work transcribing Johnny Doran (quite a few tunes appeared in An Piobaire) and documenting his life (see the radio programmes he did during the early 90s and the ones, maybe the same, coming up to commemorate JD’s centenary). And Pat Mitchell has been talking for years of doing the book on Felix.
And, on a different note not relevant to this, make sure to watch Browne and O Raghallaigh tomorrow night on the tellie!
