Owning and Playing More Than One Flute?

One of the problems with going from flute to flute is that flutes – especially old flutes – are most often not in tune with themselves. Often one must learn to blow an old wooden flute into tune. An accomplished player will play an antique into tune.
Modern flutes are generally in better tune with themselves over the two octaves we are concerned with. So, after learning to play an old flute into tune by subtle, often unconscious adjustments to one’s embouchure, one might tend to blow a modern flute OUT of tune at first.
My advice would be to play one flute at first and learn to play it well before experimenting with other flutes. I wouldn’t say not to buy other flutes. But stick to one for a good while.
OTH, in the long run it probably won’t matter much. And it is fun to play different flutes.

It’s so beautiful…

so on-topic!

I play currently play 2 flutes and a little Sweet rosewood piccolo - and whistles. The boehm flute I practise everyday and the Dixon nearly every day - the rest sometimes - maybe a couple of times a week, maybe not. It’s easy to switch between the Dixon and the Sweet but harder with the silver flute. I can never get the emboushure on the silver flute after playing simple system. Have to wait a while because my lips go like jelly!! Also going from flute to piccolo can be tricky because of the size. Piccolo to flute works for me but flute to piccolo often means fingers like jelly so I usually have to wait a bit before I can make the switch. Pretty wierd - but I love playing all of them and so keep at it!

I am so afraid of being found out
here that I post to corners where
that gramar/spelling police are not
looking…

It’s funny I always considered myself to be a one flute gal. Yet with the recent ordeal with my primary flute, i feel so lost with out it. Sure i have the crystal G flute, and recorders and such, but I had concentrated so much on my TJJ flute that that was the only flute for me.

Now maybe its time I expanded out and got myself another one! (just in case!)

However i do think that if i did that, i would really have to push myself to play it properly, and not put it aside to blow every 4 months like the crystal flute. Which is a shame because having been playing it practically hourly since sat - i’ve found that it really is a lovely flute!
