OK, I’ll admit that this idea came to me during a recent bout of insomnia, but I still think it’s a good idea. Has anyone ever discussed the idea of putting together a book/booklet of whistle advice compiled from the wisdom shared on this message board? You could call it something like “Chiff & Fipples Whistle Wisdom”. I realize that much info is available from the main page of Chiff & Fipple, but I, for one, have often wished that I had a reference book available at arms reach for my many whistle questions & sometimes that would be when it was not convenient to get to my computer.
And where else other than here do we have such a diverse collection of people with such valuable knowledge to share on the subject of whistles. I invision sections on whistle selection, whistle maintenance, how to get rid of that sick “whistle moisture” sound, which whistle work best for which situations, etc. The book could even be seasoned with “whistle wit & humor” that is ever present on this board. Maybe there could be a commerce section for the many whistle makers here & even Jessie’s pendants.
I really don’t know how to make such a thing happen, but if others were interested, I would think that we come from enough different backgrounds to pull resources/talents together to put something like this together.
Well, what do you think? OK,I’ll go back to bed now!
whatzitt, I, for one, think you may have hit upon one hell of an idea!!! I can see it all now - Thom now has in stock “The Chiff and Fipple Absolute Guide To Anything and Everything Anyone Could possibly Ever Want To Know About the Tin Whistle”…
Didn’t DazedinLA put up a bunch of this stuff on his web site? I don’t have it bookmarked but I remember that he was collecting all kinds of whistle advice.
While I think your idea is a good one, there was a thread about this a few months ago. I wish I could remember the author or what it was called–it may have even been inside another thread. I do remember it was a female who was talking about editing such a thing.
Someone on that thread pointed out that since the posts here come from all over and all different people, there would be a whole lot of problems involved in getting all the posters’ permission to use their info/experience/advice. There would be legal issues, and what about monetary reimbursement? Who would finance such a book, and how much would it be sold for? And how would all the different people contributing get reimbursed for their knowledge?
Those are some of the things that I remember being brought up in that thread, which is probably why the idea never got any farther. It is a good idea, though…

I’m thinking that all ideas would be given freely for the benefit of other whistle enthusiast, just as they are given on the board. I agree that any profit from the sale of such a booklet should go to Dale’s charities. A downloadable form of such a book is a great idea, too.

I’m not a lawyer, and I don’t play one on TV, but I do believe that since this is a public forum, the information found in it is de facto in the public domain, the disclaimer at the bottom of this page notwithstanding. I believe that the “All comments…” clause is an attempt at protection from slander or libel claims, and bears no weight WRT copyright.
As for me, I hereby place any and all posts by me on this board, present and future, in the public domain, if that isn’t already redundant.
And I think the idea of someone publishing a book/let is a great one, no matter who thought it up.
As many people as we have on this board, there must be an attorney or two out there. Please chime in with an opinion!
I think that the book is a great idea too. And, Serpent may have a point about public domain. Would it be reasonable to start a “new topic” where people could give permission to use their posts and anyone that didn’t give permission could be left out?
To further the book, I think that a section should be present for each forum on C&F. Who knows, Mel Bay might be interested in putting out a hard version of this if an electronic copy looked good.
With published yearly updates a good amount of income could be generated for charity as well as promoting an interest in music.

PS the above post is free of any rights or restrictions and anyone is free at any time to use any and/or all ideas presented
I think that a PdF type downloadable book is an EXCELLENT IDEA! To see a REALLY GOOD example of this type of document,in my opinion, see the ‘Hints for Pipers’ by Eddie Climo on SWAUP’s site.Sorry i’m rubbish at all that links stuff,-you can find it via Steve Turner’s posts on the CHIFF U.P. board.Something similar for whistlers would be ideal-Not to knock ‘The WHISTLE MATRIX’,that’s definately a labour of love!
I am not a lawyer, but as long as Dale and Rich support it, I don’t foresee copyright problems.
If in doubt, try to get in touch with each person whose comments you want to use for their permission. If you can’t get in touch, don’t use their comments.

I don’t know about copyright where you live but in my book copyright rests with the authors of each contribution and nothing should be used without their consent.
That would be one helluva project to put together, considering how many message board threads there are to go through, but I suppose if a bunch of people got together, it would be feasable.
Collect electronic versions of posts you want to include and assign each one a number.
Begin a chart or table to track contributor and permissions given. It should include, at a minimum, contribution number, contributor, date of contact attempt, date permission given.
Print out and file e-mail in which permission is given, for legal reasons.
Organize posts by topic. These are your chapters.
Write a short intro to each chapter.
Save chapters individually in electronic format (a Microsoft Word file or create an RTF from WordPerfect).
Hand off electronic files to your compositor or publisher
As a cautionary note, your book ought to be FINISHED when you hand it over to be typeset. My current author (a dear friend) is using page proofs as a further means to polish the book instead of their intended purpose of a LAST look before press.
I really like this idea as well. I’m an editor by trade, and would be willing to help with the copy editing if necessary.
I agree with those who have said that stuff on a public message board is probably in the public domain. I’m not a lawyer either, but I’ve seen compilations from other websites (humor books and such)…I don’t think it’s a major problem, especially as most of us use pseudonyms anyway.
