Overton Low D on eBay

Hey,
I was wondering if any of you English chaps were bidding on the Overton Low D. Can you tell if it is tunable or not? Just wondering.
Picardy

I see no Overton Low D on eBay but if I did I wouldn’t post it here.

I stand corrected. I was just flying through eBay and thought I saw a “low” that wasn’t there. Sorry for calling this eBay item to forums attention if you are bidding. I’m sorry. Just doing my part to boost the economy. Of course, the recycling of used goods doesn’t really boost the economy does it? By the way, how does everyone like my Avantar? I hope I didn’t steal any one’s signature image. Let me know if I did. I just like poor Sméagol.

You did however see an Overton…drool…

I like your avatar.

I did see that Overton but I was (am) waiting for the seller to give me an estimated shipping and handling charge. Oh well.

PS..I PMed you a few minutes ago, you can probably ignore it now.

Cranberry,
I got the pm. That was when I said, “Doh!! I mean, yeah, I meant to do that. Just testing.”
Can you tell that I’m new to this whole thing? Where did you get your quote. PM me if you don’t want to give away you secret.

If I have anything, it’s not secrets. LOL. It’s part of a Tori Amos song.

Tori Amos - The Waitress

So I want to kill this waitress

She’s worked here a year longer than I
If I did it fast you know that’s an act of kindness

But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace
I believe in peace
But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace

I want to kill this waitress
I can’t believe this violence in mind
And is her power all in her club sandwich

But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace
I believe in peace
But I believe in peace
I believe in peace Bitch
I believe in peace

I want to kill this killing wish
They’re too many stars and not enough sky
Boys all think she’s living kindness
Ask a fellow waitress
Ask a fellow waitress

Sounds like a great song. Wholesome.

Are we sure that’s really an Overton? Perhaps one made by Bernard and not Colin? Hmmm…

Picardy, good avatar.

First of all the picture is not very good and from looking at it I am not sure what it is as I cannot identify the mouthpiece. If my eyes are not deceiving me the diameter of the whistle looks too big for the length from what Bernard and I always made. The diameter should be 5/8" or 15.5?mm. You should also ask if it is stamped “Overton” if you want to make sure it really is.
I hope this helps.
Colin

Well they emailed me back today and said shipping and handling to the US would be £29-£34, which is too high for me anyway.

I was going to email them back and ask whether it was stamped Overton but I’m sure everybody else here did that and didn’t want to flood the inbox with the same question.

I received an email from the whistle seller on ebay saying the whistle is not stamped and that she bought it from a shop in Ireland displayed and sold to her as an Overton. She also sent a photograph of the head from a side angle. It is a Chieftain whistle and not an Overton.

Hope this helps
Colin

Did you advise her to reword the ad?

Tony,
we did and hopefully it will be updated.

Colin

Well, it’s up to $132. now. You can get an actual Overton in D, brand new, for $142. I’d be willing to bet Colin and Brigette will give you a better deal on shipping, too.

If you really had your heart set on a Chieftain, you could get it from Thom at the Whistle Shop for $90 (non-tunable) or $120 (tunable).

No matter how you slice it, this isn’t one for the educated whistle consumer.

The seller announces the whistle isn’t by the listed maker, no one retracts their bid and the price jumps higher.
eBay, gotta love it…

Auctions are funny things, aren’t they? Sometimes it seems it’s more a game people are trying to win than anything else. I can’t think of what else would make people bid a second-hand Chieftain almost up to the price of a brand-new Overton…when they could easily get a Chieftain brand new for considerably less, or, for just a few dollars more, get a brand-new, made-for-them, totally authentic Overton. It’s not even like Chieftains are rare or have a long waiting list…the one thing I can think of that might make me pay full price (or possibly more) for a second-hand whistle.

I’m rather glad I’ve never been bitten by the E-bay bug. That’s not a game I can afford to get hooked on!

“Would all bidders PLEASE NOTE. The whistle was purchased as an Overton in Doolin County Clare Rep of Ireland but after comms with the maker of Overton they think that it actually a Chiefton whistle. It is still a lovley and mint condition instrument. Please feel free to retract bids if you wish to change your mind.”

Touching don’t you think - it would have been good of her to mail the bidders direct in addition to tucking away this note. Thought it fair to let the high bidder know about the innocent error which she was unaware of as it happens…

A couple of bids have been retracted and the price is now less than that of a new Chieftan. Is there now an eBay whistle watch dog group?
