Overton low D, my review

Hello,
I give you my opinion concerning my Overton Short Reach Low D after few days:

  • Very beautiful appearance and high quality of manufacturing.
  • Very very easy to find (cover) hole with all fingers.
  • Easy to handle, weight is light.
  • Holes diameter is small.
  • Distance between hole is short.
  • Great sound, lot of sound variation is possible when I modify air pressure.
  • Need to warm up (alu body)
  • 1st octave is very easy to play
  • Air pressure level between two notes is high
  • Backpressure is high, because windway is very narrow
  • 2nd octave, I find that is necessary to blow with high pressure but not high flow, it is a question of time to learn this.

Second octave:

000000 (+), highest pressure / lowest flow, very very loud, very very difficult note
X00000 (+), very high pressure / very low flow, very loud, very difficult
XX0000 (+), very high pressure / very low flow, very loud, difficult
XX0X00 (+), very high pressure / very low flow, loud, not easy to play this note
XXX000 (+), high pressure / low flow, easy to play
XXXX00 (+), no problem, easy
XXXXX0 (+), no problem, very easy
0XXXXX (+), no problem, very easy

First octave

No problem, very easy

If I blow with too much flow sound is not good (parasite sound)

What do you think about my beginner opinion? Thanks.

Have a nice day,

I think your review is very good, and it is refreshing to see a whistle review in tabular format: We get those all too rarely.

About the air pressure on an Overton. That is the both the challenge and the great potential of the Overtons. I think you are right that it is something that needs to be worked on. When you say that too much air will cause the sound to deteriorate, I agree, and would like to add that in my experience the bigger problem is blowing the Overton low D with too little air pressure. That is something you can get away with in the lower octave, but you risk being slightly out of tune and of the windway clogging easily.

this might be the most clear and complete review on the board ever! :astonished:

Could not agree more. Walden, is there an award for the most excellent, non-hogwash-blah-blah review? I vote for Stefpat!
