I think the biggest problem beginning whistle players have is not supporting their breath, especially at the end of phrases. I’ve even seen this on experienced, decent players of non-wind instruments who take up the whistle. I think this unsupported breath is often what causes people to despise tonguing in beginners, because they often not only tongue between notes, but STOP THEIR BREATH too. We all know many good players tongue often, but not one of them start and stop their breath continually getting that “toot - toot - toot” beginner sound.
Let me put in a plug: Elfsongs were very much in vogue on Chiff about a year ago. The sound is pure, the paint is beautiful eye candy, the heft substantial. $50 is a good price, they are $80 new for a Copper tone, and $90 new for Sassy Brass.
Opinions differ, or maybe the Elfsong you tried was different. I polled Chiff when I was shopping. Here is a summary:
I am looking for a whistle with a pure, ethereal sound, and moderate volume. It took a good deal of research to come up with my short list. After posting the polll, I listened to the clips of Syns and Elfsongs on Clips & Snips and read a lot of the other posts about these two brands.
