I am playing a silver flute. I know this board is not really for that but I read this board in anticipation of switching to a 6 hole flute. I am new and I have a lot to learn. My post today is about sounding the 2nd octave. My finger charts show the second E up through C are the same fingering so Im assuming this is where “overblowing” comes in. Im trying to find the sound and when I do it often sound “very high”. Sometimes it sounds very muddled by lower overtones. I want to practice 1st being able to blow a note and then jumpling right to the same note up an octave. It seems twice as hard to make the overblow note as the lower note. The embouchure seems to need much more precision as does the attack angle. Is there any guidance or advice anyone can offer me?
patience, mainly. Blow low note, then overblow
for the same high note. It’ll come.

I’ve been having success by ‘reaching’ for the far edge of the hole with my upper lip. Sort of like when your lips protrude when whistling (with lips, not a tin whistle).
Im going to try that. Stick your jaw out and them reach for the otherside with your upper lip. I should look fabulous!
Pushing the flute into your jaw a bit more will probably help more than sticking your jaw out.

which is characterized by pure and often apparently
fruitless struggle. More focused, yes. When I posted
similar stuff years ago I was told that flute
isn’t for the faint of heart. Courage, mon brave!

That’s not to say we won’t be delighted when you ‘see the light’ and get a keyless wooden job.
