OTish: Name this Mexican tune

So, every Wednesday, some of my coworkers and I go out for Mexican food (we call it “Mexican Wednesday”).
I thought I’d learn a Mexican tune to start us off this week.
I picked a song I’ve heard many times on commercials (which just happens to be in D).
Here’s the tune as I have figured it out (please excuse any errors):

X:1
T: ?
M: 6/8
L: 1/8
K: Dmaj
fe|fdc dAG|AF2 zDE|FGA Bcd|ec2 zed|
|ecB cAF|GE2 zaa|aba gfe|dz2 z|

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the name of this lively jig-like tune?
It’s definately not “The Mexican Hat Dance” nor “La Cucaracha”, so unfortunately, I’m out of Mexican tune names… I’m merely curious.

what does z stand for?? never seen that in abc.

I converted the ABC to notation, and what I got was definitely part of “The Mexican Hat Dance.”

It’s what I guess you’d call the B part. It’s the music that comes after the "de dum, de dum, de dum (clap clap) bit.

Redwolf

Yup. It’s the Mexican Hat Dance in a mode slightly different than what I’ve heard.

The tune you posted is actually the harmony part of Mexican Hat Dance, played by the 2nd trumpet in a mariachi band. The melody (in D):

On whistle it might be easier to play in G, although you’d have to fudge the two lowest notes…

z is a rest. Probably don’t get many of those in Irish music, now that I think of it. I had to look it up to use it here.

Now that you mention it, Redwolf, I have heard this tune follow what I consider to be the tune for Mexican Hat Dance. I guess I just figured that to be a “set”, since I couldn’t find notation for the Hat Dance that contained the tune I was looking for. But it does make sense as a “B part” as well…

Here’s the music I found for the Hat Dance, if you’re interested (it’s written for piano): http://www.pitt.edu/~deben/2Mexihat.pdf

Ah, thank you… I’ll try it on my clarinet, see how the harmony sounds.

Here, I found an MP3 online:

You can hear the harmony part (the ABC you posted above) played very prominently by the violins…
 Olé!
