OT - Uncle Earl (Old Timey) at Kennedy Center

Uncle Earl is an Old-Timey band, a tad less sophisticated than the Lonesome Sisters, perhaps, but still great. They have a Real Player [u]video of a couple of tunes from a performance at the Kennedy Center[/u]. It’s pretty cool. The second song, “Warfare” (AKA “My Warfare Will Soon Be Over”) has become one of my favorites.

I used to know one of the members of Uncle Earl pretty well. But it appears there’s only one member of band still around since the last time I saw them, and my friend isn’t in the new lineup.

I just realized that last night when I looked at the personnel on the She Went Upstairs CD. The CD has some nice stuff on it, but it doesn’t have that energetic string band sound that the current group has. I’m anxious to hear what their new CD with the current lineup sounds like.

The third tune features a very nice example of Appalacian clogging, which surely must have its roots in Irish step dancing. It starts at about 8:00 minutes into the performance.

And the couple of times I saw them were before that album was made, I think – Tam (my friend) was playing fiddle in addition to singing, and I don’t think Laurie, Sally, Pooh, or Jean were playing with them, though they did have string bass and banjo (I think) players with them. I believe the bass player’s name was Amanda…

I din’t have time fer that, but took it anyhow. And I’m going to do it again in case I missed something. This time with instruments in tune and a set of bones handy.
