OT: to those of you in Ohio

GO

!!!

Need I say more?

umm… what the heck are those things???

Andrea ~*~

I do believe dem be buckeyes! Magickal powers! Carry one in yer pocket fer good luck! Roast and eat one fer good tummyache! Fun to rub rapidly against sidewalk, and touch to friend’s arm for a “burning bean”. (That last is a lot more fun if you’re a 10-year-old male).
~*~ Serpie-Pie

I’m afraid you do need to say more.

We used to have a tree full of something that looked like those when I was growing up in Spokane, WA, but we called them “horse chestnuts.” Are they the same thing?

Redwolf

Ohio state buckeyes are playing a game tonight. for those who need a little more than horse chestnuts.

OSU Buckeyes, officially the #1 college football team in the nation!

I lived in Canton (10 miles from Scott) for 5 years and the madness for football in that part of the country was a constant source of amazement for me. I lived in a city with a population less than 100,000, with a high school football stadium that holds 50,000. The next town over (Massilon, OH) was a smaller town with a bigger and nicer stadium for its high school! Following the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns was the next thing to a religion out there.

Scott - do you make the candy buckeyes? They were a staple at every gathering in Canton during football season.

There’s a participant on a piping forum from Columbus, Ohio who describes it as:

“A drinking town with a football problem”

Best, John

Candy buckeyes abound aplenty in this house, especially this time of year. Plus they seem to be on every tray of cookies given to anyone.

Ya Scott…

Go bucks!

That was an intense game!

I am not a really big football fan.
However, when it comes to the bucks, this ohioan could not help but get involved in it.
Needless to say there was a lot of shouting in this house hold. I even piped in a couple times.

woo hoo!

Laura

The great Canton/Massilon football continuum has been around quite a while. My maternal grandmother Ruth Kappes March (Canton-18th & Fraser) was a football fan into her later years, delighting in its annual devotions. She had a daily piano show on Canton Radio WHBC, accompanied visiting soloists and made ends meet for the family playing church organ and silent movie house piano in the pre-talkie era. She was a superb sight player, and learned music young, a luxury for her 1890s Zanesville farm family. No indoor plumbing, but they thought music important enough to scrimp for.
-I still recall the cool, leafy aroma of Canton in the fall.
BTW, -My Dayton-bred sweetheart says
a buckeye is “..some kind of nut..” Her folks are in Versailles, Ohio. (pronounced Ver-sales, not Ver-si) -Like Russia, Ohio; pronounced “Rooshie”.

Brian, I’m not a football fan in any sense, but when someone asks me what team I favor, I always tell the the Canton Bulldogs, of course!

Canton-Massilon is allegedly the oldest football rivalry in America, dating back 110 or so years. The annual game attracts 60 or 70 thousand fans. Remember that this is a high school game! Massilon comes onto the field with a live Bengal tiger (their mascot). Each school has a marching band with over 100 kids. I’ve never been to the Super Bowl, but I’ve been to an Army-Navy game, and that’s the only thing that came close to the hoopla surrounding the Canton-Massilon game.

WHBC is still a very good local radio station, by the way.
