This isn’t strictly pipes. My wife is in Chicago this week. If time allows (she is attending a conference), she would like to go to a session. Over from Australia, this is her first visit to that city. I’ve looked at the list on The Session, but I don’t know how current the info is. Any suggestions? All help greatly appreciated.
I don’t have details, but it’s my impression there’s almost always something going on there. Have her call Chief O’Neill’s for starters ( & maybe the Halsted Harp?) … Another option you could try is Pat Cannady or Karen Cook; they’re playing at Johnny O’Hagan’s tonight though I don’t know whether it’s a session. But you can reach them at http://www.piobagusfidil.com/contact-us , and they might be able to provide some other dates and places. Good luck to her! Great town.
I’ve been to a session near Chicago, in Orland Park, I think. There isn’t a session there anymore, alas, but I contacted Teresa Shine, who used to host it, and she gave me permission to post her response:
“Hi Stanton! Thanks for the message! There are still quite a few in Chicago and area suburbs which is great. The ones that I know for sure are still going on:
Sundays: Chief O’Neill’s pub in Chicago, The Abbey Pub in Chicago, Nevins in Evanston, The Grafton Street pub in Chicago.
Tuesdays: Chief O’Neill’s again, Clancy’s in Oak Lawn
Wednesdays: Clancy’s in Oak Lawn and I know there is another on Wednesdays at O’Shaughnessy’s(sp?) in Chicago
Thursdays: Molly Malone’s in Forest Park (I host that one!).
The Three Counties pub in Chicago.
Fridays: Clancy’s in Oak Lawn (I host that night with John Williams).”
There are several more current Chicago and suburban sessions, believe it or not!:
Tuesdays: Us at Johnny O’Hagan’s, The Celtic Knot in Evanston
Wednesdays: Irish American Heritage Center
Thursdays: Corrib Pub in Chicago, Gaelic Park in Oak Forest
Nicola went to the session at Chief O’Neill’s. Lots of fiddles!, she said (a whistle player). She would like to have stayed longer, but there was a train to catch.
Thankyou to everyone for their helpful responses, both on and off forum.
