OT: Re-install Win98 via DOS. Thanks everyone! prob solved

:frowning: I was in the middle of de-fragmenting a Win 98 machine when I lost power. (OK I accidentally turned off the power switch on the spikebar. ) Now it won’t boot all the way up. It bets almost all the way done then it stops and it says

ERROR LOADING EXPLORER.EXE
YOU MUST RE-INSTALL WINDOWS

I’ve done it from DOS before but I forgot how. If anyone can post instructions or PM me I sure would appreciate it. It’s an older machine but it was working fine before this happened. Thanks.

c:\win
(return or enter)

PS: didn’t notice how appropriate was this signature borrowed from Brecht…

Thanks Zoob. That takes us back to the boot-up process. There is a way to actually re-install Windows from DOS which is what we’re looking for.

Paul, I’ve re-installed Win98 over existing installations lots o’ times without loosing the data (and configurations) that was originally there. Is this what you want to do? Get out the installation disk and boot up from the CD.
Ya?

Thanks Tony. I got the same info in a PM and it seem to have worked fine! It’s really cool how everyone around here is so helpful.

Windows 98 works fine??? Since when??? :boggle:

I could believe that about Mac or Linux, but as for Windows ever working fine, I take with a pound of salt, not just a grain!
