Is it possible to post .exe files here? I found a nifty program which generates nice jigsaw puzzles which can be sent as executable files, and I’d liike to post one on Chiff, if possible. They work just fine as e-mail attachments.
That’s a little scary, because .exe files are a kind that can be used to spread computer viruses. I would be inclined not to post any .exe files, even if benign, because it’s considered an important safety policy never to open an unknown .exe file.
I would not be afraid of an .exe file which was posted by someone whom I trust. I frequently download and use .exe files from reputable web sites, and I’ve never gotten a virus thereby.
The problem is, I’ve picked up viruses in emails from people I trust. The AV software checkup is a good idea, but I would still be wary of anything with .exe unless it was from a software company or other significant source I trusted. Even if Paul put it up, I would be inclined not to open it. No offense to Paul, but I just don’t feel comfortable opening .exe files unless I absolutely have to.
The solution is to invite those who would be interested in obtaining the program to contact you via email or pm and REQUEST it be sent. That way both parties are aware of the exchange and if anything did happen (not likely if the person sending it is trusted and is not having difficulties) it could be quashed very quickly.
Oh I know what you’re talking about Jerry; my remark was just a weak variation on an old Groucho Marx joke: I wouldn’t join any club that would have me. I love Groucho Marx: even funnier than Karl.
[quote=“I wouldn’t join any club that would have me.” I love Groucho Marx: even funnier than Karl.[/quote]
That’s the most ridiculous thing I ever hoid!
Glad to see I’m not the only closet Marxist here-- love those old films. IMHO, the Marx Bros have held up a lot better than their contemporaries.
That quote is even sharper if you know the circumstances. When the Marx Brothers were relatively unknown, Julius (Groucho) tried to join a country club which was pretty widely known to be anti-Semitic. He was turned down for membership as expected. Years later, when the Brothers became very famous ( and wealthy) this same club approached Groucho and asked him if he wanted to join, whereupon he delivered this famous zinger.
BTW-- Wombat-- the pictures arrived today. Thanks. Looks like my Jerry Lee Lewis special is in the company of several Copelands, plus a low whistle I don’t recognize. In another pic, there’s an unidentifyable banded wooden instrument. What am I looking at?
Just a suggestion:
If you email or post executable files, you may want to Zip them first. Many mail systems now have filters that delete all *.exe, *.pif, *.com, etc. so that people don’t accidentally execute an infected file. If you’re running real time virus scan like Norton or McAffee, it will automatically scan the file when you unzip it, before it executes or writes it to the drive. We use this at work and it provides me with a level of protection; which, keeps me from fat fingering an attachment and infecting my machine.
So if you’re making a request for an executable, request it in Zip format or simular compressing archive format. It can save you time in transmittion, space in initial download, and reduce your risk of infections.
Most folks here are probably internet savy enough to already be doing this, but for newbies to the Net, this is a suggestion that can save you lots of headaches.
… and having to deal less with viruses, and techno-gobbledy-gook give you more time to …
Oh, good Paul. You correctly identified the Jerry Lee special—for thsoe who don’t know it’s a whistle Paul made for me in blackwood and pink ivory—but the others are all wooden whistles from my collection. They were photographed at a ‘meet the Woods’ get together. There are three blackwood Abells, F, D and Bb, a Grinter low F and a Macedonian village whistle of unknown origin. Carol has offered to scan them and host them for me so I’ll put them up as soon as she finds time.
I thought it would be fun to show a variety of whistles. The Abells bring out just how distinctive your whistle is. I also thought that perhaps very few board members will have actually seen a Grinter and certainly even fewer will have seen a Macedonian village whistle.
