OT - Partial Eclipse in SW US 6-10 eve.

There’s going to be a partial eclipse of the sun tomorrow evening (June 10) which will be visible in the US west of Atlanta, GA. Some places get it better than others (Phoenix will get 65%, Anchorage, AK will get about 20%). Remember, don’t look at the sun! Poke a small hole in the side of a cardboard box and look at the sun’s reflection on the other side. That method really works. You can poke several holes to get the size that works best. Enjoy the early sunset.

But
I’m just a beginner, so what do I
know…

I’m sure it was lovely behind the thick cloud cover that we’ve looked at all day.

It was quite lovely, actually. I love the sort of tinge of other-worldliness that happens when the sunlight gets chopped off too early. I sat outside and played an original slow air in honor of the passing sun. It was really pretty, sure wish I could remember it.

On the topic of the eclipse, we got a great view here in San Diego.

I took this photo with a Nikon D1 digital camera using a 500 mm mirror lens (effective 750mm focal
length with 1.5x CCD sensor size multiplier) from the top of my building at work. Luckily, the clouds were rolling in from the ocean giving me some good filtering. I used
several neutral density filters on the back of the mirror lens, shot using aperture priority, most shots were 1/3200.

This image has been resized down to 800 wide.

also, a shot my wife took of the sun coming through the trees, casting lots of crescents on our backyard roll-off roof observatory.

I almost forgot about it, until I was standing in line at the supermarket and noticed that it was getting unusually dark out (it’s been very sunny and hot here today). The subsequent drop in temperature was as welcome as the softening of the light…few places in the Santa Cruz Mountains are air conditioned, and these 90+ degree days can get pretty wearing by late afternoon.

WOW, Michael! Beautiful, elegant image; thank you for posting it.

I saw it! I saw it!

It was really cool. I love stuff like this. I also really hope no one looked directly at the sun!!! I get so worried that someone is going to damage their eyes!!! Great pictures Micheal!
