OT: Off to California

My wife and I will start driving
to LA on Saturday. We’re moving out
of our apt, putting things in
storage, and arriving in LA
knowing virtually no one. Judy
will study this summer and fall
at USC (which seems unable to help us
find housing), we return to ST. Louis in
early Dec.

Needless to say we’re rather
broke–she’s on half pay (sabbatical),
and I’m retired. Any advice as to
where we can find an inexpensive, safe,
apartment/studio is welcome. Thanks, Jim

Kinda depends on your price range.

One important word of advice…before your sign the lease, go to the apt complex at around 11:30 p.m. so you can see the real story about the neigborhood.

When I was in grad school I was po, so I rented a nice two bedroom duplex between Robertson and LaCienega…during the day the neighborhood seemed OK, but that first night I realized that I had just rented smack in the home turf of the Playboy Gansta Crips. Drug deals and rap music till 2:00 a.m every night…not a fun scenario. Not one of my most situationally aware moments. At least now I know the differenc between the sound of backfire and gunfire.

Jim,

Some of the local news papers have their classified ads on line for you to browse. This will give you an idea of pricing.

Check your private messages.

It is my experience that you will not find any good deals in the paper or on the internet for LA. You really need to get local papers, and look around. I rent a 2 bedroom nice place in Canoga park and its 910.00 mo and that is inexpensive for my area Canoga park/Woodland hills. When we first started looking we couldn’t find anything under 1200.00 /mo. Put once we got to LA we started finding deals. I am sorry I didn’t see this earlier, we just rented one of our vancant condos for 720.00 /mo.Good luck.

Hi, Cerrabus!

I’m north of you in the AV. For $910, you could rent a house here. Though with the savings, one would burn up a car every 2 years commuting to the SFV! Did that for 13 years… 100 miles RT to Woodland Hills.

Do you have any whistle dealers down there other than SamAsh? I got a nice Feadog there 2 weeks ago. The only other thing they had was Acorns.

Gary

There aren’t any good whistle dealers here, Sam Ash is about it. There is a store in Agoura Hills that sell generations. If I want a whistle I buy from the whistle shop online.

Awwwwwwww Jim your leaving St. Louis and I havent gotten a chance to get over to hear you guys play. (had an invite from your guitar/banjo player). Well…GOOD luck in California. BUT…are you sure you should come back in December? That could REALLY throw a person into a weather shock. PS if you need some to keep your COPELANDS safe let me know (JOKING)

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
We’ll be able to receive e mail from
various places on the road; also
to read the board. So if anyone can
think of more suggestions, please
let us know. Well, Off to California!

Good luck, Jim! Talk to you soon, and I am glad to hear that you’ll be able to receive emails. Keep on Truckin’, I mean, Whistlin’!

Best,
Bloomfield

Thanks, Bloomfield.

DD, and all others
concerned, the ST. Louis University
Hospital
hand clinic is vastly better than
what I saw at Barnes Jewish, if my
experience is to be trusted. DD was
right to recommend it.

Dr. Woodbury,
a female African American hand
surgeon at SLU, is the first person
I’ve talked to in several months
(other than our own Jim Wesson)
who appears to understand what’s going
on. I’m forbidden from playing whistles
for a month, however. Will see what
happens. Best to all

Jim,

Checking out this web site:

You can put in the city and the type of place you’re looking for.

The whistle community wishes you travel mercies.

Gary

time to take up that nose flute you’ve been coveting, Jim…

If you need help finding a place, I would be willing to help you out. Just let me know where you are planning on landing and how much is in your budget.

Darin

Thank you for your kind offer.
We’re needing to pay under 800, if
possible, and we need to be able
to get to USC. A studio or one
bedroom would do. We should be
arriving in LA in about a week
and one-half; we’re
driving off to New Mexico this Sat or Sun.
Best to all, Jim

Great,I’ll start looking and post what I find here.
Darin

Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I’ve had relatives over and it slipped my mind. Here are some listings. I’ll try to find more.

Jim, here is site for Irish music and sessions in LA. A good place to find people that love the irish tradition. They have sessions on Monday nights and sometimes on Sundays.
