OT: New discussion forum opening up

Hey all-

I am in the process of completing a Gaelic oriented site. When totally finished, it will have a webstore, song/tune scans, stories, information, etc.

Part of this is a discussion forum. While I don’t want to take ANYthing away from Dale, there are sections there that expand a little more (Such as current events, a section for Irish dancers, handcrafting of instruments, things of that nature.)

Please, when you get a chance, stop by, see what it looks like, offer suggestions, sign up, refer to friends, or just ignore things entirely.

The web address is http://www.gaeliccrossings.com

Additionally, I am still working on the scans of the King street session songbook. The index is up, and you can request individual scans, but there’s over 1000 tunes, it will be a while before they are all scanned in. (However, requests do take priority.)

Hope to see you all there at one time or another!

May we post on it in English?

Yes, by Gaelic I mean oriented towards the Gaelic part of the world (Ireland, Scotland, etc.), with related information. I will eventually have a language section, but for now it is mostly music, dance and current events.

Well done*******************

Now this new spot should make life a wee bit more fun again.
I wish you the very best of luck for the future.

Stacey-

Thanks for the good wishes! I just hope I can get the site to grow. I’m trying to have the webstore up and going within a week or two as well.

Webstore meaning, CD’s, instruments, ???

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor.

At first, a few whistle makers. I would like to expand it to include instruments, Irish gifts, etc. The hard part is actually finding a supplier. Know any Irish gift wholesalers?

Hey, it looks great Aodhan!

When you start on the language section, I suggest including links to the sites http://www.flashlang.com (my new favorite) and http://www.daltai.com as they have some great free resouces for learning Irish.

Thanks, ava! Good suggestion!

I also plan on having some shops, and I will announce the whistle and flute makers that will be my initial stores soon!

Thanks to all that have started coming over and joining in! I appreciate it!

Aodhan

WOW!

Build it and they will come!
Looks great, like walking into a new house…

Thanks, wizz. Actually, if ya’ll know some dancers, I could really use some of those as well. Every time I post on the irish dance boards, they delete my post

It’ll build, it just takes time. Watch for the store opening in a week or two.

I realize that the whole thing about separate compartments for all different instruments could get totally out of hand. But I have been thinking that there’s no discussion forum for accompanimnt. I don’t mean guitar, bouzouk or piano specifically but a place where all issues of accompaniment could be discussed, This would include theory, chords, picking techniques, etc, etc. For instance Michael Eskin just posted some good stuff for DADGAD guitar. At another web site (associated with an email group) another person has posted a whole scheme for dealing with accompaniment-no matter what the instrument. It’s great stuff but not available unless you belong to that list. I think there needs to be a sort of central place for this stuff-all the issues surrounding accompaniment of this type of music.

Hmmm…

What about…

(sorry, typing while thinking…)
.
.
.
How about a category under the music section entitled “Style of play/accompaniment”, with the description…
.
.
“A place to discuss styles of play, accompaniment, and general meshing of instrumentality” (If that is even a word…)

Good suggestion!

Aodhan

Aodhan,
A suggestion: You may want to try and generate some actual discussions in a couple forums before you launch 30+ forums. This is a major usability issue, you definitely want to generate some traffic and seed some discussions to get beyond the ‘dead forum’ stage first. If you find lots of people posting about particular topic, then break it out into a new forum.
Just a suggestion.

Why King Street?

Also, being a pedant, Strathspeys are not Irish tunes, as suggested on you site! I know you know that, but read the intro back and you’ll see what I mean.

Moan over, looks good, I’ve added your site to favourites for further visits,

alb, Martin

Yeah, I know. I’ll rewrite the intro for that. Basically, the King Street songbook is a project that grew out of the King Street session. They put together a book of tunes that they play a lot. They have a wide variety, including Scottish, Cape Breton, a couple polkas, etc. It’s just a really nice tune resource that appeared here in Arizona a few months back. I plan on having all the tunes eventually scanned, but there are a lot of things crowding at the moment. (Ren Faire being one of them…)

I wanted to talk about the U.S. President’s speech, but didn’t think C&F would be a great place for it. If anyone is interested in talking about it, I thought that the world events page over at Gaelic Crossings would be a good place.
