I’m trying to find the right name for a kitten who loves music. She loves to be sung to and she falls asleep to my whistle playing, even the high notes! She’s done that since she first got here. Any kitten who considers whistle music a lullaby needs a good Irish name, but the right one is just not occurring to me. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
How’s about ‘Colleen’ (which, of course, is Gaelic for ‘girl’)?
I have a cousin called that. On second thoughts,She might not appreciate a kitten having the same name!
My grad school roommate and I named our cat Pog mo Thoin, Pog for short. (That way I could, for example, tell my grandmother that Pog means kiss in Irish without having to tell her what the rest of it means.) He (it could easily be a unisex name) was a wonderful cat, who died at about 18 from complications due to diabetes.
My Khani cat loved music too. We found this out shortly after we got her…I was listening to one of the Brandenberg Concerti on the computer and she got really excited…jumped up on my lap staring at the box and purring. Whenever I’d play my whistles or recorders, she’d come running, climb into my lap or onto my shoulder and purr…it was so sweet!
I’m not sure about “Ceilidhe” but “Ceili” (pronounced KAY-lee) which is a type of Irish dancing. I named my cat Ceili, when I was trying to think of an Irish name it came to me and I really like it. I think my kitty does to. When the right name comes to you, you’ll know it!
I don’t know if this is helpful, but my mom used to breed Tonkinese kittens. Some of the names were: Somi (like solfege syllables), Meela (also solfege), Midori (the violinist), Yo-yo (Yo-Yo Ma the cellist), and Sebastian (Johann Sebastian Bach). I guess you could say we’re a little obsessed.
I don’t know what color your kitty is, but I’ve always thought that Guinness would be a good name for a black cat (and Guinness and Irish music go together y’know…)
How about Carolan after the great Irish composer, Turlough O’Carolan? Or Bridget after O’Carolan’s Bridget Cruise Air. Or Blind Mary! Or Jenny Picking Cockles. Or Fanny Power! There are so many great ones!
