OT: Mountain Dulcimer web site?

I have been looking for the Mountain Dulcimer equivalent of C&F for a couple days but can’t really find anything. Does one exist?

Not that I am aware of. I do know of two Yahoo groups: DulcimerFriends and lapfiddle. Owl Mountain Music (http://www.owlmntnmusic.com/dulcimer.htm) has a good listing of local clubs thoughout the US. The Sweet Music Index (http://www.bearmeadow.com/smi/) has lots of good information.

I am glad I went to that site. I did not know the difference between a mountain dulcimer and hammered dulcimer. I thought the generic ‘dulcimer’ applied to the hammered variety. I would like to find out more about them since they are so nice to listen to.

I’m “Kathy” there. I lurk in the Mt. Dulcimer threads because I want one of those too, but I post to the Hammered threads and the Jam threads when I post. These are a really friendly and helpful bunch of people.

Yes, I’d agree that Everythingdulcimer.com is the closest thing to a C&F for dulcimers, BUT nothing is really close to C&F. :wink:

The hammered dulcimer is by far the older of the two (unrelated) instruments, so “dulcimer” SHOULD be used to mean the hammered dulcimer. However, it seems like the mountain dulcimers have us outnumbered so they often get away with using “dulcimer” to mean the fretted (a.k.a. mountain, Appalachian, or lap) dulcimer. However, I’m not afraid – it takes 31 lap dulcimers to match my 1 hammered dulcimer in sheer number of strings! :devil: Bwahahaha!

As for the difference, there are many ways to tell them apart. This is my favorite: drop one dulcimer on each foot. The one that hurts the most is the hammered dulcimer. :smiley:

I’m not sure which kind of dulcimer you mean when you say you want to find out more about “them.” Everythingdulcimer.com is good but has more about mountain dulcimer than hammered. If you’re interested in hammered dulcimer, a great website to start with is the Kitchen Musician website: News, Politics, Sports, Mail & Latest Headlines - AOL.com It has lots of information, tunes, humor, and lots of links to explore, too. I highly recommend it. (A bonus for whistlers: dulcimer-friendly keys coincide with D whistles, so a lot of the tunes on the site are great for whistle, too.)

I’m thinking MD…because it’s more portable and doesn’t cost as much as HD. I registered at ED as Thaze and have learned A LOT. I can read and read and read web pages for hours (ala, being awake at 3:33am) I just wish I had the $$ to get a Dulcimer right this second! lol
