I have a few live tracks of Mick Hanly, recorded on tour in Germany in the seventies. The recordings are with Andy Irvine, and also with Liam O’Flynn & Andy Irvine (tunes: Brian O’Lynn/Sean Bun and Master’s Return/Kitty’s Wedding). There is a really outstanding version of Mick Hanly singing “I Courted A Wee Girl” (you might know Cathy Jordan’s version of this song from Dervish’s At the End of the Day). I seem to remember hearing that Mick Hanly & Andy Irvine toured as a duet for some years, pre Patrick-Street.
Does anybody have some info on Mick Hanly?

He recorded Celtic Folkweave together with Michael O Donnell (later of Bothy fame as Michail O Domnhaill)in 1974 a pre Bothy project as Liam Flynn, Donal Lunny, Tommy Peoples Matt Molloy and Triona Ni are all participating.
Two solo recordings followed: A kiss in the morning early(1976)with help from many of the above and ‘As I went over Blackwater’ (1980) with Lunny Molloy Noel Hill Paddy Glackin Declan Sinnott and Andy Irvine.
The tune ‘Jessica’s polka’ which has some circulation as a popular one overthere (though not so much here) was written by him for this lp to celebrate the birth of his daughter.
When Christy Moore left Moving Hearts Hanly replaced him. These days I hear him on the radio sometimes, obviously he has gone into Irish country (& W).
Like Steve earlier this week I suddenly feel my age when looking for dates on the record labels. I was very fond of his songs at the time.

Can’t believe Hanly has gone C & W. Why does this happen? I mean, Paul Brady, I can understand, but people like Dolore Keane going all Pop music… I dunno. Must be the money.
