Say, isn’t a “berliner” a sort of jelly doughnut, and the word to indicate a citizen of Berlin something else? Sort of like “Carioca” for a Rio de Janeiroid. I recall rumors of Germans laughing behind their hands when Jack Kennedy said that.
“Berliner” is that lovely, quite fatty donut as you are saying and it’s high time is soon coming as “German Karneval” is in February…
I cannot remember Germans laughing about President Kennedy not if he used the term “Berliner” as it also counts for the citizens of the town, they were very proud of him. Like Berliner there are also Hamburger which in Germany is a sausage and the people from Hamburg. Well, Zoob’s “Pariser” hm… well I better not mention what it means in Germany as this might be another reason on top why schools cannot access this forum
Looking at the laughing aspect when hearing him say “Ick bin ein Berliner” than it could be for the “ICK” as mostly English and Americans have problems with the German “Ich” as it is spelled more like “iche” as in Michelle. Speaking of pronounciation problems… most Germans have problems in saying “the” not correct it sounds more like the “sse” as in Golumn’s “preciousese”.

P.S. Like the way the thread kept growing with all the different languages… macht bitte weiter so…

I doubt the “Berliner” thing was a joke in Germany, due to the seriousness of the situation when it happened, but it’s become a nerd joke since, and that’s why i used it.
Speaking of jokes, here’s one i read today in a Douglas Adams book: this guy wakes up in a hospital after the operation, saying “Doctor! What’s wrong, i can’t feel my legs!!!” And the doctor responds: “That’s because we amputated your arms.”
Groucho Marx. I watched a Marx brothers (Groucho, Harpo and Karl?) movie last Christmas, in Slovakia, and man, i hadn’t laughed that much in a long time. This reminds me, i gotta watch more of their stuff. Classic! Harpo, by the way, is Oprah spelled backwards.
I’ve been exchanging some emails with Brigitte and Colin Goldie, and i just wanted to say, and here seems to be as good place as any, that they’re great, the nicest and kindest couple. I heard they make good whistles too.
So what? You expected to be safe from me answering nonetheless? In this thread safe of sx, politics**, religion or rec**ers?
I was close to trespassing, if not for Brigitte’s reminder
** although you had your meak attempt…

PS: just noticed I sound here as that bogomil wretch in the Name of the Rose…
Well, as long as I don’t sound like the same actor, looking a like true ethnic Cro-Magnon in Quest for Fire…
Hehe, I said I thought too much German and French was being spoken in the thread. I have now, of course, changed my mind and find this an extremely delightful thread!
Complete idiocy, that. Total urban legend. If you hear such rumors again, ignore them (or better yet slug whoever says it with large history book). Just shows how people have grown out of touch with that time and the circumstances then.
It’s a bit like saying that, if President Bush standing on the smoldering heaps of Ground Zero had said “I am a New Yorker” to express his sympathy & solidarity, the 9/11 widows would have chuckled, thinking, hey, he just called himself a magazine.
