I’m looking for an copy of the out-of-print book “The Folk Songs of North America”, Alan Lomax, Doubleday & Company, 1960. It’a a hardback, and I don’t recall ever seeing it in soft cover.
If anyone has a copy that they would care to part with, please contact me off-board at my profile e-mail address.

I wish I could help you, CDon. I’ve got a copy, but I treasure it. My folks gave it to me as a birthday present a long time ago. It’s the only copy I’ve ever seen.
I have seen it around. I think I have a battered one kickin around in my storage unit. I think there was also a condensed version that was smaller. At one time I had both.
Have you tried any of the online used-book services such as Alibris or Bibliofind? I had pretty good luck with Bibliofind awhile back when I was looking for Child.

A check of http://used.addall.com gave 48 hits for the title (with some duplication). They range in price from about $12 to $86.50. You’ll have to sort out paper and cloth and whether there are in fact full and abridged editions, but there are several hardbacks between $15 and $25 that definitely look like the real thing.
Bibliofind was bought by Amazon about two years ago (I think) and a whole lot of dealers bailed out; it might be worth checking though, since AddAll dropped it from their searched databases when Amazon bought it.
A small caution about Alibris: they have excellent customer service and sometimes have excellent prices, but if you look at AddAll you’ll find that particular volumes they list are sometimes listed with other services directly by the dealers, for less money. You can tell they’re the same copies because the descriptions are worded identically.
That said, for books Alibris actually has in their own warehouse(s?), their prices can be a bargain, and I’ve gotten books from overseas through them because despite Alibris’ surcharge the total was actually less than the foreign dealer’s because of a lower shipping cost.
You can tell which books are in their own hot little hands because they say “Usually ships in 1 business day”; the two-to-three days is for their domestic dealer network and the 21 days is for the foreign dealers.
I should add that a few months ago they changed their pricing policies for books from their dealer members so that many are actually $.05 less than direct from the dealers. Looking over the search results for this title I found many that fit this tiny-discount category, and one that might or might not have a surcharge.

At the moment, I think the unabridged paperback version would suffice my needs if you have the time and inclination to locate it, and can do so without too much trouble. Please send any particulars by e-mail or private message, as you prefer.
I currently have a copy on loan from the Public Library, but I am sure they are going to want it back, narrow-minded lot that they are

Thank you John (and Charlie) for your research on locating this book, and for your recommendations and comments in general regarding used book buying. I have done little of this, and your advice will be most useful if I decide at some point to get a “better” copy of this book or some other. I do appreciate your efforts.
