I got a set of Walsh shuttlepipes a couple of years ago and I found that it was easier for me to learn a new GHB tune on them than on the practice chanter. I sympathize with anyone needing to buy a set of pipes. Luckily my Dad got mine for me about 24 years ago.
Someone mentioned that you might be able to find some through a local pipe band. Definately check that out. One of our band’s students lucked out recently when one of our pipers found a 50 yr old set on a trip to Scotland that he loves so he sold his old set to the student at a BIG savings.
I’ve gotta plug drumming here too. Tenor drumming is facinating, frustrating and fun. Especially if the strictness of piping gets in the way of your desire to be inventive. However, everyone will know if you mess up and they will be watching. But, we have more fun than can be tolerated. It’s a different midset than piping. Our band has a job tomorrow…whoopee!
I have a nice set of starter pipes I only use for our up-helly-ah cellebration when it is -0 degrees here. I am interested in a trade. They are worth about $600. They are very nicely set up by a first class pipe instructor. I have played them with 2 bands and had no trouble tuning them with the band which is the problem you run into when you get inexpensive pipes. I am interested in a nice low D and/or a reg. D.

Thanks for your interest!
