OT: Lament for America

Whether you agree or not, it’s an interesting lesson in history.
Something to think about…

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control.

From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents,
unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915
to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend
themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from
1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews and others who were
unable to defend themselves were rounded up and
exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948
to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to
defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From
1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to
defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971
to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend
themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From
1975 to 1977, one million ‘educated’ people, unable
to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in
the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in
Australia were forced by new law to surrender
640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their
own government, a program costing Australia
taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent
(yes, 44 percent!)
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with
firearms are now up 300 percent.
(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned
them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still
possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a
steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this
has changed drastically upward in the past 12
months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that
their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in
break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain
how public safety has decreased, after such
monumental effort and expense was expended in
“successfully ridding Australian society of guns.”

The Australian experience and the other historical
facts above prove it.

You won’t see this data on the American evening
news or hear our president, governors or other
politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives
and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only
the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans…before it’s too
late!

The next time someone talks in favor of gun
control, please remind them of this history lesson.

With guns, we are citizens.
Without them, we are subjects.

Sounds like Rush Limbaugh talking, or Charlton Heston.
Those figures are all speculation; it is known that the Communists executed many people in China but the precise figure is still unknown. Few of the people in these examples had guns in the first place, either. Lots of good guns would have done the Ukranian peasantry when Stalin cut off their country and left them to starve to death en masse.

All countries in europe have gun control.
About 10 max deaths from gun fire a country makes what? 200 a year?
How many do you have?

I rest my case!

Yes, I have to agree. Those are all foolish numbers to quote. How many of those countries were democracies and people had any say in who was governing their country? How many of those countries were too poor for the people to have had any guns in the first place?

Who will kill whom seems to be a bit skewed, as well. The last “official” statistics I saw for murder rates put Luxembourg as number one, Russia as number two, and the US as number three. Canada was down around number 9 or ten. Having guns or not doesn’t seem to be the deciding factor. Although it seems a bit trite, the fact still remains: “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” Its more about attitude and fear, than about which weapons. These are social/cultural/ethical problems.

…I’m sorry. I thought this was the Chiff & Fipple website. I must have stumbled onto the Bullet & Barrel website. Sorry!

I guess you are right, someone should kill this thread.
I, for one, can get pretty worked up about stuff like this. :frowning:

“kill this thread?”

Mind if I finish it off?

Lorenzo, excellent site. Thanks for the link.

Very annoying pop-ups, though. Can’t control 'em on my work computer.
I like http://www.animationfactory.com/, which also has editing tools - you can resize a GIF to 100x100 to use as an avatar, for instance, which is how I made the nifty Cryptkeeper or Travis Bickle images.

Install Mozilla and turn off pop ups.

That may be true, but it is alot easier to stand at the head of a train and kill lots of people quickly with a gun than it is with a knife. Moreover, the destructive force as well as the ability to kill from a distance make it alot harder to survive or fend off an attack with a firearm.

Anima, you didn’t add a smiley to your last post, so I can’t be sure if you’re joking or really as violent as your post sounds. Why would you be standing at the front of a train trying to hurt anyone?

 Um,…Yeah! Ann Arbor is one of the richest cities in Michigan. There’s quite a difference. You should see it some time. Funny thing though now you mention it, I went to university in Detroit but U. of M. Ann Arbor did have a higher level of student assault and robbery than Wayne State in Detroit. I guess in Detroit we knew better. Every one was drunk and packing heat.

DJM,

No smilies were intended as it’s not a very funny subject. Sorry for the obscure reference, but I was referring to Colin Ferguson and the LIRR Massacre back in 1993, an event that changed my views on gun control.

What’s all this then? Aren’t the pipes dangerous enough??

The whistle forum must have become too quiet for some…
