Something hilarious happened yesterday that I’d like to tell you about.
I had borrowed a NFB video about Rocket Richard (famous Canadian hockey player) to show at school to my grade five kids during French class. I previewed the movie at home to see that, although a bit dry at times, it looked appropriate. Mind you, I was skimming through the newspaper at the time and may have missed a few of the words at the bottom of the screen when some dude is speaking en Francais and there are English subtitles.
ANYWAY, to make a long story even longer, I showed the video yesterday. Part way through, one chap was speaking in French and as I looked out the window for a second while the subtitles rolled along, one of my good kids (and PTA president’s daughter) leaps out of her desk and runs over to me to whisper, “That guy just swore on the video!!” Well, I heard only French and missed the subtitles…needless to say, my eyes were glued to the screen for the rest of the movie. I made a mental note that it was about 15 minutes into it at the time.
After school, I rewound the thing to find what I had missed. Sure enough, there it was. A sports reporter talking in French and, at the bottom of the screen, the following subtitle:
“The Rocket was the shiftiest player on the ice.”
