OT - I'm Being Sued!

that’s it brad, your sued!! :swear: these are the exact words maggie tatcher used in her last speech when she was not elected

[Edited so as not to completely kill the fun immediately. Please, folks: read carefully, and remember that a wee bit of skepticism is a good thing!]

If you want let in on the gag, you’ll note that the “411mania” link above brings you to the “scoopthis” website as reporting the story. Well:

http://www.scoopthis.com/pages/article.cgi?file=default/aboutus.htm

(and while you’re there, there’s a little link that says “Whatever You Do, Do Not Click Here”, or something. Do not click there. I’m warning you.

Being unhip and out of touch with the popular culture of my own civilization, I must plead utter lameitude. Yes, I am lame. So lame.

I think I’ll go play some music, now. I’ll hit a sour note just for you, BrassBlower. :stuck_out_tongue:

Aww, c’mon, Aaron, you KNOW that when you tell someone not to do something, they automatically want to go and do it!

And he’s right. You do NOT want to click there. LOL!

 Good job brass blower. :smiling_imp: You certainly had us riled up!

My world is a little calmer now. Blood pressure returning to normal.

This was a good one

But you picked on my favorite metal band. :frowning:

I know, they are litigation obsessed. I still like their tunes.

I would support a countersuit. literaly, with money. The bothey band members could make millions from these freaks if this is a valid suit. I listened to metallica all through my youth. I will never pay for a single tune of theirs now. I might send four figures to anybody that sues them for dammages. All I’d ask is for my money back. Those F**kers have been STEALING from classical composers for years (decades now). I don’t think they have an original tune in their brains at this point. All they do is steal steal steal.

Anything that takes money away from them and helps traditional music is a good thing in my book. They must othe the clancy brothers $200 million by now by their theivery of “Whisky in the Jar”

  1. I understand as long as you don’t play copyright songs to make money that you won’t get law sue. Am I right?
  2. Anyone know whether “The Immigrant” and “Scarbrough Fair” are copyright songs or not?

No, you can violate copyright, without making money off it. At least under American law.

  1. Anyone know whether “The Immigrant” and “Scarbrough Fair” are copyright songs or not?

Scarborough Fair isn’t entirely copyrighted. The verses are found in some editions of Mother Goose, and are an old ballad, well within the public domain. You would need permission to use a copyrighted arrangement, however. Here’s a field recording of a version of this ballad, from the American tradition: http://www.smsu.edu/folksong/maxhunter/0060/index.html There are various tunes on these ballads.

Walden,

Are you sure? Man, I could get sued down to my skivvies just from singin’ in the shower! :astonished: :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, I was under the impression that if you weren’t making money with someone else’s tune/material then you couldn’t get sued?

No, singing a song in private doesn’t violate copyright. But if you made copies, without permission, and gave them out for free, that would violate copyright. And it would also violate copyright if you performed it on the air, not for profit, without securing copyright permission. The copyright office has a web site that explains all of these issues. It’s at http://www.loc.gov/copyright/

brassy, i don’t think you will ever be safe on april 1 again

SCOOPTHIS.COM

wondering if Dale Wisely has anything to do with that site?

Do tell them you will go for court costs.

What happens when you give
Viagra to a lawyer who isn’t on this board?

He gets taller.

OK, what’s the difference between a lawyer (for RIAA) (who’s not on this board) and a catfish?

One is a bottom-feeding scum-sucker and the other is just a fish.

whew! I’m glad I’m just a car man!   :stuck_out_tongue:

I think if they are classical, as in 1750-1820 they could probably care less, being rather dead.

What I heard was that Simon and Garfunkle went and copyrighted an arrangement of it they got from Martin Carthy (who is infinitely cooler than them), but he sued them and won. I think they probably wanted everyone to think they wrote it. A good many people still do, actually.

The way I see it its ok to copy stuff and make lots of money at it:roll: but not to make a little and not be able to employ a slick lawyer
Its so monkey see monkey do :astonished: in this world that you are either a monkey seeing or a monkey doing :boggle:

Kicking the topic back up to see if there are any further developments in the suit. I HATE hearing sh*t like this!

Still just a big hoax by BrassBlower, far as I know.
